Zambian Delegation Explores Ghana’s Thriving Mining Sector

A delegation from Zambia paid a visit to the Ghana’s mining sector particularly, the large-scale mining and small-scale mining industries including Tarkwa Goldfields mine and  Dagete Gold Mining Limited in the Western Region of Ghana respectively to explore and learn how mining thrives in Ghana. The visit, in the broader scheme of things was also part of the delegation’s plan to explore various thriving sectors under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

The Zambian delegation, led by Brigadier General Chishala Mulenga, sought to deepen their understanding of the structure, regulation, and environmental management of Ghana’s large-scale mining industry. Welcoming the visitors, Mr. Kwame Appau, the Relieving Manager of Tarkwa Gold Mine, expressed his enthusiasm.

“You have come to one of the biggest operations you can have. We will take you through a presentation and then to the field, where you will get a bird’s eye view of the plant and the pit operations.”

The Head of the Zambian delegation explained the purpose of the visit, noting, “After visiting all the agencies under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, we thought that a site visit to the mine would give us a clearer picture of how large-scale mining is conducted in Ghana.

“The team wanted to appreciate the environmental impact, operational practices, and lessons they could draw from Ghana’s experience,” He added.

The Zambian delegation’s visit went beyond just the large-scale mining operations, as they also had the opportunity to observe the small-scale mining activities at Dagete Gold Mining Limited in the Tarkwa area. This experience allowed them to witness firsthand how artisanal miners contribute to Ghana’s diverse mining landscape.

The Zambian delegation’s visit to Ghana’s mining sector has undoubtedly provided them with valuable insights into the country’s integrated approach to mining. By observing both the large-scale industrial operations and the small-scale artisanal activities, the delegation was able to gain a comprehensive understanding of Ghana’s efforts to balance economic development with environmental responsibility.

As the world continues to grapple with the challenges of sustainable mining, this exchange between Zambia and Ghana serves as a testament to the importance of cross-border collaboration and the sharing of best practices. Through such initiatives, nations can learn from each other’s experiences and work towards a future where the mining industry can thrive in harmony with the natural environment.
