The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in response to the shocking attack on the Director of Operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in the Ahafo Region, has  held a joint meeting with the Speaker of Parliament and the Minister of Interior to ensure that swift action is taken to address the concerning incident.

This engagement follows the disturbing events that unfolded recently, where the NAIMOS Director and his team were confronted by a violent mob led by a sitting Member of Parliament (MP) for Asutifi North constituency, Hon. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has stepped in to initiate a high-level engagement with key government stakeholders.

“The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has taken note of the recent attack on some members of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) during an operation at Bromkron near Hwediem in the Ahafo Region.”

The Ministry also assured the general public that sector Minister’s meeting with the key stakeholders i.e the Speaker of Parliament and the Minister for Interior is to ensure that “rigorous investigations” are conducted to hold all individuals involved in the attack accountable.

This swift response underscores the government’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding the safety and well-being of those tasked with the responsibility of combating the ravages of illegal mining in the country.

The attack on the NAIMOS Director and his team symbolized the latest chapter in the ongoing battle against the pervasive issue of illegal mining, or “galamsey,”.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, under the leadership of Minister Armah-Kofi Buah, has been at the forefront of spearheading the government’s crackdown on this environmental and economic menace, with NAIMOS playing a crucial role in the field operations.

The involvement of a sitting Member of Parliament in the violent confrontation with the NAIMOS team has once again highlighted the troubling issue of political interference in the fight against illegal mining thereby, leaving many wondering if there is actually political will to curb the menace.

The Ministry’s swift response by  engaging  the Speaker of Parliament and the Interior Minister underscores the gravity of this breach of trust and the need for decisive action to address such abuse of power.

Such action further demonstrate the ministry’s commitment to ensuring NAIMOS operates without fear or favor.

In addition to the high-level engagements with the Speaker of Parliament and the Minister for Interior, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has also emphasized the importance of collaboration and coordination among various government agencies and stakeholders in addressing the challenge of illegal mining.

This multi-pronged approach, combining legislative, law enforcement, and community-based efforts, is crucial in achieving lasting and sustainable solutions.

The Ministry’s swift response to the NAIMOS attack is also a testament to its commitment to restoring public trust and confidence in the government’s ability to effectively tackle the illegal mining crisis especially, vowing to take action against the sitting Member of Parliament if found culpable.

Taking action against an MP of the sitting government implies that the ministry is leaving no stone unturned in ending the illegal mining activities.

By taking such decisive action and engaging with key decision-makers, the Ministry aims to send a clear message that such acts of violence and obstruction of justice will not be tolerated, and that the safety and security of those on the frontlines of this battle will be prioritized.

While  the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources continues to navigate the complex and often dangerous terrain of illegal mining, this latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the formidable challenges that lie ahead.

However, the government’s resolute stance and the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders provide hope that the tide can be turned in favor of environmental protection, sustainable resource management, and the rule of law.
