The mineral Income Investment Fund (MIIF) of Ghana has welcomed a delegation from the High Commission of the Republic of Zambia in Ghana to strengthening bilateral cooperation within Africa’s mineral value chain.
While the global mining industry continues to evolve, two African powerhouses, Ghana and Zambia, are poised to rewrite the narrative on the continent’s mineral wealth management.
The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) of Ghana, the country’s sovereign wealth fund for mineral revenues, has taken the lead in fostering deeper collaboration between these two mineral-rich nations.
The impetus for this strengthened partnership was a recent visit by Mr. Daniel Mahongo, and his delegation from the High Commissioner of the Republic of Zambia to Ghana.
The meeting, hosted by MIIF’s Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Justina Nelson, was a significant step towards deepening this bilateral cooperation within Africa’s mineral industry to the benefits of the respective nation.
“MIIF, Ghana’s sovereign wealth fund for mineral revenues, remains focused on maximizing value from the country’s mineral portfolio, including gold, lithium, manganese, diamonds, and emerging critical minerals, through strategic investment, value addition, local content development, and intergenerational wealth creation.”
Mrs. Justina Nelson
Ghana and Zambia’s Mineral Wealth

The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) was established by the Government of Ghana to manage and invest the country’s mineral wealth for the benefit of present and future generations.
With a focus on strategic investment, value addition, and local content development, MIIF emerged as a key player in the country’s efforts to transform its natural resource wealth into sustainable, long-term prosperity.
MIIF’s impact on Ghana’s mining sector has been profound. The fund has leveraged its expertise and resources to drive innovation, promote responsible mining practices, and foster inclusive economic growth.
By strategically investing in the value chain, MIIF has not only enhanced the country’s mineral revenue management but also set the stage for deeper regional collaboration.
Bilateral Cooperation

During the meeting, Mrs. Nelson highlighted the mutual opportunities for learning, investment, and partnership across both Ghana and Zambia’s mineral ecosystems.
She also noted that Zambia’s leadership in the copper and cobalt sectors presents significant avenues for cooperation, particularly in areas such as joint investments, technical cooperation, beneficiation strategies, and the development of Africa’s emerging 24-hour mining economy.
“The two mineral-rich nations can also learn from each other’s experiences, share technical expertise, and explore co-investment opportunities in areas of mutual interest within the mineral value chain as they look forward to re-writing the narrative about the continent’s fledging mining sector.”
Mrs. Justina Nelson
In response, the Zambian delegation, led by High Commissioner Mr. Daniel Mahongo, expressed gratitude for the warm reception and the opportunity to engage with MIIF.
Mr. Mahongo reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to leveraging its mineral wealth for development, industrialization, and diversification, highlighting ongoing reforms in state participation, licensing, Artisanal Small-Scale Mining (ASM) formalization, and innovative investment vehicles.
“Zambia is open to regional cooperation through Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), joint initiatives, and engaging the private sector in downstream mining, processing, and royalty-backed investments.”
Mr. Daniel Mahongo
Mr. Mahongo also expressed his confident that stronger collaboration will support Zambia’s reform agenda, promote sustainable growth, and turn its mineral resources into long-term national prosperity.
Sustainable and Equitable Mining Sector

The partnership between Ghana and Zambia, facilitated by MIIF, represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and equitable mining sector in Africa.
By sharing best practices, technical expertise, and co-investment opportunities, these two nations can leverage their mineral wealth to drive economic transformation, create jobs, and improve the lives of their citizens.
This collaboration reserves the potential to set a new standard for mineral resource management on the continent, fostering innovation, transparency, and inclusive growth.
The two country i.e Ghana and Zambia look forward to witnessing the tangible outcomes of this partnership and the positive impact it will have on the lives of Ghanaians, Zambians, and the broader African community.
