Ecobank Group has marked a defining chapter in its history with the unveiling of a commemorative Founders’ Monument as part of activities marking its 40th anniversary.
The landmark event, held at the Group’s headquarters in Lomé, Togo, honoured the seventy visionaries whose collective resolve gave birth to what has become Africa’s leading Pan-African banking institution. The ceremony formed part of a broader celebration of four decades of innovation, integration and impact across the African continent.
The unveiling of the plaque was more than a ceremonial act. It was a moment of reflection on the journey of an institution that began as a bold idea in 1985 and has grown into a financial powerhouse connecting businesses, governments and communities across Africa and beyond.
Honouring the Visionaries Who Dared to Dream
The Founders’ Monument bears the names of the seventy original shareholders from ten ECOWAS member states who believed in the idea of an African-owned, world-class bank at a time when such a vision seemed improbable. Their ambition was clear from the outset: to establish a financial institution that would serve Africa’s needs, promote regional integration and compete on the global stage.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ecobank Group Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Awori underscored the deep symbolism of the monument.
“This Plaque is a lasting tribute to the seventy Founders who dared to imagine a Pan-African bank when such a vision seemed impossible. It connects our origins in Togo to our presence today across Africa, and it reminds every Ecobanker of the important mission we carry into the future.”

His remarks highlighted the continuity between Ecobank’s humble beginnings and its present-day continental footprint, reinforcing the idea that the institution’s growth is rooted in the courage and foresight of its founders.
A Symbol of Governance and Institutional Continuity
Ecobank Group Chairman Papa Madiaw Ndiaye also paid glowing tribute to the founding members, describing the monument as a powerful symbol of leadership and responsibility.
“The Founders’ Plaque stands as a permanent recognition of the men and women whose courage, unity and determination built Ecobank. It is also a symbol of our governance and institutional continuity, and a reminder to future generations of the responsibility to safeguard and advance the mission entrusted to us.”

His comments reflected Ecobank’s emphasis on strong corporate governance and long-term institutional stability, values that have helped the bank navigate changing economic landscapes across Africa over the past four decades.
Representing the founders and their families, Fogan Sossah expressed heartfelt appreciation to Ecobank’s leadership, employees and partners for nurturing and strengthening the institution over the years. He noted that the monument serves not only as a tribute to the past but also as an inspiration for the future.
“The Monument inspires the next generation to carry the torch forward, to uphold unity, integrity and service to Africa,” he said. “The Founders planted the seed; it is now our collective duty to ensure the tree continues to grow.”
His remarks captured the intergenerational responsibility embedded in Ecobank’s mission and the expectation that future leaders will remain true to the bank’s founding ideals.
A Gala Evening Celebrating Excellence and Loyalty
Later in the evening, Ecobank hosted a grand gala at Hôtel 2 Février in Lomé, bringing together government officials, business leaders, partners and stakeholders from across Africa and beyond. The event featured official speeches, artistic performances and moments of recognition that celebrated the bank’s achievements over the years.
A special tribute was paid to the founding members, while awards were presented to Ecobank affiliates and entities that distinguished themselves during the year. The ceremony also honoured employees with the longest service, reflecting the Group’s appreciation for loyalty, dedication and institutional memory.
Since opening its first affiliate in Lomé in 1988, Ecobank has expanded steadily into a continent-wide financial network. Today, it operates in thirty-two African countries, more than any other financial institution on the continent. Beyond Africa, the Group maintains an affiliate in France and international offices in major global financial hubs, reinforcing its role as a bridge between Africa and the world.
This expansive footprint has positioned Ecobank as a critical enabler of intra-African trade, cross-border payments and regional economic integration, aligning closely with the vision set out by its founders four decades ago.
As Ecobank celebrates its 40th anniversary, the unveiling of the Founders’ Monument stands as a powerful reminder of the institution’s origins and enduring mission. It reflects a journey defined by resilience, innovation and a steadfast commitment to Africa’s development.
