The Ghana Stock Exchange witnessed one of its most energetic trading sessions in recent weeks as banking stocks ignited a powerful rally that swept across the market.
Investors responded enthusiastically, pushing key indices higher and lifting overall market capitalization to fresh levels.
At the close of trading, 23 listed equities had participated in the session. Out of these, 12 recorded gains while only one posted a loss. The positive breadth reflected renewed confidence in the market, particularly within the financial sector, which once again proved to be the engine of growth on the exchange.
Standard Chartered Leads The Charge
The standout performer of the day was Standard Chartered Bank Ghana. The bank recorded a remarkable 9.98 percent increase in its share price, closing at GHS 32.30 per share. The near double digit appreciation placed it firmly at the top of the gainers’ chart and set the tone for the rest of the market.
Closely following was SIC Insurance Company, which climbed 9.96 percent. Republic Bank Ghana gained 9.94 percent, while Enterprise Group also delivered a solid performance with a 6.62 percent rise in its share price.
The surge in these financial counters played a decisive role in pushing the broader market higher. Market watchers noted that the consistent rally in banking and insurance stocks suggests improving investor confidence in the sector’s earnings outlook and long term stability.
Financial Stocks Index Records Strong Gains
The bullish momentum was clearly reflected in the performance of the GSE Financial Stocks Index. The index advanced by 1.81 percent to close at 6,802.65 points.
Even more impressive are the cumulative figures. Over the past week, the Financial Stocks Index has climbed 13.35 percent. Over a four week period, it has surged by 38.76 percent. On a year to date basis, the index is up an outstanding 46.38 percent.
Such numbers are not just statistical highlights. They represent renewed optimism about the financial services sector, which has undergone significant restructuring and reforms in recent years. Investors appear to be rewarding institutions that have demonstrated resilience and improved performance.
Composite Index Extends Winning Run
The benchmark GSE Composite Index also posted notable gains. It rose by 172.83 points, representing a 1.44 percent increase, to close at 12,176.92 points.
This translates into a 9.36 percent gain over the past week. Over the last four weeks, the index has climbed 35.54 percent. Since the start of the year, the market has delivered a 38.84 percent return to investors.
These figures highlight one of the strongest sustained rallies seen on the exchange in recent times. Analysts believe that improving macroeconomic conditions, easing inflationary pressures, and better corporate earnings expectations are supporting the upward trend.
CalBank Records Heavy Volume Despite Loss
Interestingly, while most financial stocks advanced, CalBank stood out for a different reason. It was the only equity that lost value during the session, declining by 2.13 percent.
Despite the drop in its share price, CalBank recorded the highest trading volume for the day with 1.22 million shares changing hands. This suggests active investor interest, possibly driven by portfolio adjustments or short term profit taking.
MTN Ghana followed with 816,032 traded shares, while Societe Generale Ghana recorded 454,081 shares. Guinness Ghana Breweries also saw 230,582 shares exchanged during the session.
Trading Activity Moderates
At the end of the trading day, a total of 3,015,234 shares were traded, corresponding to a market value of GHS 14,195,597.18.
Compared to the previous trading session, this represented a 22 percent decline in trading volume and a 3 percent decline in turnover. While activity moderated slightly, the strong price gains in key counters ensured that the overall sentiment remained upbeat.
Market observers explain that such fluctuations in daily trading volumes are normal, especially during sustained rallies. What remains significant is the continued upward trajectory of prices and indices.
Market Capitalization Climbs Higher
The rally also lifted the total market capitalization of the Ghana Stock Exchange to GHS 223.8 billion. This steady upward movement reflects growing investor participation and rising valuations across listed companies.
For many investors, the sustained climb in market capitalization signals strengthening confidence in the Ghanaian equity market. It also underscores the important role the stock exchange continues to play in mobilizing capital and supporting corporate growth.
Renewed Confidence In The Market
The strong performance of banking and financial stocks has become a defining feature of the current rally. With double digit weekly and monthly gains recorded across major indices, investor sentiment appears firmly positive.
While short term corrections are always possible, the broader outlook remains encouraging. For both institutional and retail investors, the recent surge presents renewed opportunities to participate in Ghana’s evolving capital market story.
As banking stocks continue to spark trading enthusiasm, all eyes will remain on upcoming corporate earnings announcements and broader economic indicators. For now, the bulls remain in control, and the Ghana Stock Exchange continues to build momentum.
