The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) recorded a remarkable surge in market performance despite a sharp decline in trading activity at the close of the first weekday trading session.
At the end of the session, a total of 2,291,013 shares were traded, representing a market value of GHS 17,656,160.21. This marks a significant drop compared with the previous trading day on Thursday, March 5.
Data from the exchange shows that trading volume declined by about 85 percent, while market turnover also fell by approximately 86 percent.
The sharp contraction in activity suggests that although fewer shares changed hands, investor sentiment remained strongly positive, pushing prices upward across several listed equities.
Majority of Stocks Record Gains
In total, 21 equities listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange participated in the trading session. Out of these, 12 companies recorded gains while only two experienced declines, reflecting the overwhelmingly bullish mood in the market.
Access Bank Ghana emerged as the top performer among the gainers, recording a 10 percent appreciation in its share price to close at GHS 46.64 per share.
The strong performance by the bank helped lift overall investor confidence in the financial sector.Standard Chartered Bank followed closely with a 9.99 percent increase in its share price. Ghana Oil Company also posted a 9.98 percent rise, while SIC Insurance Company gained 9.9 percent.
These strong price increases across major companies played a key role in pushing the market indices significantly higher despite the limited trading volumes.
Few Stocks Record Losses

Societe Generale Ghana also posted a marginal loss of 0.09 percent. The limited number of decliners indicates that the positive momentum across the market outweighed the negative movements recorded by a few stocks.
Market analysts say that such trading patterns often reflect strong investor confidence in specific sectors, even when overall market participation remains subdued.
SIC Insurance Leads Trading Volume
Despite the overall drop in trading activity, a few equities recorded relatively high trading volumes during the session.
SIC Insurance Company led the market with the highest volume of traded shares, recording 968,779 shares changing hands. This strong activity placed the company at the center of investor interest during the trading day.
MTN Ghana followed as the second most actively traded stock with 419,562 shares. CalBank also recorded significant activity with 303,752 shares traded, while Enterprise Group saw 302,939 shares exchanged.

The index closed at 14,587.17 points, representing a gain of 2.2 percent for the day. The strong upward movement highlights the sustained momentum in Ghana’s equity market in recent weeks.

These figures indicate one of the most robust periods of growth for the Ghana Stock Exchange in recent years.
Financial Stocks Continue to Shine
The financial sector also posted an impressive performance, as reflected in the movement of the GSE Financial Stocks Index.
The Index rose by 3.73 percent to close at 9,285.94 points, reinforcing the sector’s strong influence on the overall market performance.

Year to date, the financial stocks index has nearly doubled, registering a 99.82 percent increase. This reflects strong investor appetite for financial sector equities and growing confidence in the sector’s long term outlook.
Banks and financial institutions have remained key drivers of the exchange’s recent rally.
Despite the sharp fall in trading volume, the overall value of companies listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange continues to grow steadily.
The current market capitalization of the exchange stands at GHS 267.4 billion. This reflects the increasing value of listed companies and sustained investor interest in the Ghanaian equity market.
Rising share prices across key sectors have contributed significantly to the growth in market capitalization in recent weeks.
Market watchers believe that the continued rally could attract more investors to the stock market, particularly as equities begin to offer attractive returns compared with other investment options.
Outlook for the Market
Although the sharp decline in trading volume highlights some caution among investors, the strong gains recorded by the major indices suggest that the bullish momentum in the market remains intact.
If current trends continue, analysts expect further gains in the coming weeks, particularly if investor confidence remains strong and more companies continue to record price appreciation.
The recent performance of the Ghana Stock Exchange demonstrates that even with lower trading activity, strong investor sentiment can still drive significant market growth.
