President Emmerson Mnangagwa has paid tribute to Ghana’s historic role in Africa’s liberation movements, describing the country as a key partner in Zimbabwe’s journey to independence.

Speaking during his state visit, he emphasized that Ghana holds a special place in the hearts of Zimbabweans due to its unwavering support during the anti colonial struggle.

According to him, the relationship between the two nations is deeply rooted in shared sacrifices and a collective pursuit of freedom. He noted that the visit itself serves as a reaffirmation of long standing ties built on mutual respect and solidarity.

“Your beautiful country occupies a warm corner in our hearts,” he said, reflecting on the emotional and historical significance of Ghana to Zimbabwe’s independence story.

President Mnangagwa highlighted the enduring personal connections that bind the two nations, particularly through the legacy of Sally Mugabe, whom he described as a proud Ghanaian who contributed significantly to Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.

He praised her courage and dedication, noting her advocacy for the rights of women and children. He also extended appreciation to Ghanaian women, acknowledging their broader contributions to social development and continental progress.

In a moment that blended diplomacy with cultural reflection, he referred to the familial bond between Ghana and Zimbabwe, describing the two countries as in laws. This characterization, he said, reflects a relationship that goes beyond formal agreements and is sustained by shared heritage and human connections.

Ghana’s Role in Zimbabwe’s Independence

The Zimbabwean leader underscored Ghana’s critical role in supporting liberation movements across Africa, particularly during the struggle against colonial rule in Southern Rhodesia.

He recalled that many Zimbabwean freedom fighters received training and support in Ghana, which played a significant role in their fight for independence.

He pointed to the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah as a defining influence on the continent’s liberation efforts. Nkrumah’s declaration that Ghana’s independence was linked to the freedom of all African nations, he said, inspired movements across the continent.

President Mnangagwa also referenced the struggle against the colonial regime led by Ian Smith, noting that Ghana’s support in terms of training, resources, and solidarity contributed to dismantling the system.

“We are forever grateful to Ghana,” he stated, emphasizing that the assistance provided during those critical years remains a cornerstone of the relationship between the two countries.

From Liberation to Economic Transformation

While reflecting on the past, President Mnangagwa stressed the importance of translating historical ties into modern economic cooperation. He noted that both countries now face the challenge of achieving true economic independence that benefits their citizens.

He emphasized the need to harness Africa’s natural resources in ways that improve the quality of life for people, particularly women and young people. According to him, the next phase of the Ghana Zimbabwe partnership must focus on industrialisation, modernization, and sustainable development.

“Our engagements present us with an opportunity to translate our strong historic bonds into practical economic dividends,” he said, signaling a shift toward results oriented cooperation.

The President highlighted the potential for increased trade and investment between the two countries, adding that both governments are committed to creating an environment that supports business growth and economic transformation.

President Mnangagwa described the state visit as an important step in consolidating a high level strategic partnership between Ghana and Zimbabwe. He expressed appreciation for the hospitality extended to him and his delegation, noting that it reflects the depth of the relationship.

He reiterated that the collaboration between the two countries extends beyond government to include strong people to people connections, which continue to sustain and deepen bilateral relations.

The visit, he said, provides an opportunity to explore new areas of cooperation while strengthening existing ones. He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the engagements would contribute to long term development goals in both countries.

Looking Ahead with Shared Purpose

As both nations look to the future, President Mnangagwa emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing common challenges. He noted that Africa’s development depends on the ability of its countries to work together and leverage their shared strengths.

He called for a renewed commitment to Pan African ideals, highlighting the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable growth and prosperity. According to him, partnerships such as that between Ghana and Zimbabwe serve as examples of what can be achieved when countries build on shared history and common goals.

The visit has reinforced the enduring friendship between the two nations, while also setting the stage for deeper economic and strategic cooperation. For both Ghana and Zimbabwe, the challenge now lies in translating their historic relationship into tangible benefits that improve the lives of their people.
