Liverpool are edging closer to reaching a full agreement with French defender Ibrahima Konaté over a new long-term contract, with negotiations progressing positively in recent weeks.
Reports from the UK and France indicate that talks between the club and the player have intensified, with both sides now “closer than ever” to finding common ground after a prolonged negotiation period.
While no deal has been formally sealed, there is growing confidence within Anfield that an agreement will be reached soon.
The progress made so far in contract renewal talks between the Reds and Konaté comes after months of uncertainty surrounding the centre-back’s future, with Spanish giants Real Madrid previously monitoring his situation closely.
However, their interest has cooled significantly since late 2025, removing a major obstacle in Liverpool’s efforts to retain one of their key defenders.
Contract Talks Finally Gaining Traction
Negotiations between Liverpool and the center back have been ongoing for around 18 months, initially stalling due to disagreements over salary and some contract terms. Early offers from the club were reportedly rejected by the player, who felt they undervalued his importance to the squad.
Despite that impasse, recent discussions have been more productive, with Liverpool improving their offer and the player increasingly open to committing his long-term future.
The 26-year-old is also keen to resolve the situation ahead of the upcoming World Cup, a factor that has accelerated talks.
Importantly, the absence of concrete competition from Madrid has strengthened Liverpool’s position. Although the Spanish side had considered a move, potentially on a free transfer, reports suggest they “stepped back” from serious pursuit as early as November.
From Leipzig to Anfield Mainstay

Konaté joined Liverpool in 2021 from RB Leipzig and quickly established himself as a vital part of the club’s defensive structure and has since not looked back.
His blend of pace, physicality and composure made him a natural partner for club captain Virgil van Dijk.
Together, the duo formed one of the most formidable centre-back pairings in the Premier League, playing a crucial role in Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning campaign last season under head coach, Arne Slot.

Konaté’s performances during that run reinforced his status as one of the top defenders in European football.
However, his current contract—signed in 2021—has been running down, placing Liverpool under pressure to avoid losing him for free.
That scenario had attracted interest from several top clubs across Europe, most notably Real Madrid, who took Trent-Alexander Arnold from the Reds last season on a free transfer.
While optimism is high, sources stress that the deal is not yet complete. Liverpool remain cautious after earlier setbacks in negotiations, and final terms still need to be agreed before any official announcement is made.
Still, momentum is clearly on the club’s side. With talks advancing and external interest diminishing, Liverpool now appear well positioned to secure Konaté’s future and maintain defensive stability heading into the next phase of their project.
