Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, addressed the global assembly at the United Nations Headquarters during the recent ECOSOC Youth Forum. He articulated the firm dedication of the government under His Excellency John Mahama toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals with a specific focus on health and well-being.
The Minister explained that the administration prioritized strengthening policy frameworks to expand essential opportunities for the younger generation. He emphasized that these initiatives sought to improve the structural support systems available to citizens transitioning into the professional workforce.
The United Nations Economic and Social Council organized this annual gathering to bring together young leaders and policymakers from every continent. This forum functioned as a primary platform for youth to engage directly with international institutions regarding the future of global development.
The 2026 edition of the forum took place in New York City. The sessions concentrated on increasing youth participation to solve challenges regarding employment, inequality, and sustainable growth.
Minister Opare Addo opened by addressing the necessity of increasing capital investment to boost entrepreneurship among the youth. He noted that access to finance remained a critical hurdle for many innovative individuals seeking to scale their businesses.
The Ghanaian Minister affirmed the country’s partnership with international bodies to secure sustainable financing for local projects. The Minister described these financial resources as indispensable tools for unlocking the true potential of the youth population, though he believed the Government could not work alone.

He mentioned that the government integrated public-private partnerships as a central pillar of the national development strategy. These collaborations aimed to foster an environment where youth organizations received the necessary technical and logistical support.
The Minister noted that the Government advanced digital innovation through the creation of the global application dashboard. This tool enhanced data-driven decision making and provided a modern platform for active youth engagement.
Flagship initiatives such as the “Adwuma Ye” program expanded employment opportunities across various sectors of the economy. These programs provided direct access to markets and specialized skills training for thousands of participants.
He stated that the establishment of a purposeful Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment served as an evidence to Government’s commitment to the people. Furthermore, the Ministry acted as a strategic platform dedicated solely to the advancement of young people.
The Minister concluded his remarks by calling for stronger and more coordinated partnerships to enhance accountability. He argued that innovative financing mechanisms were required to ensure tangible outcomes for the upcoming generation.

The Minister emphasized that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals required robust frameworks that placed young people at the center of decision making. He noted that the government remained focused on creating sustainable ideaas and though it has achieved quite a lot, more is required to achieve success.
