Tottenham Hotspur have released a strong statement condemning a wave of racial abuse directed at defender Kevin Danso following their 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League played on Saturday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Austrian international found himself at the center of controversy after his error late in the game allowed Georginio Rutter to score a dramatic equalizer in the fifth minute of added time.
The goal ensured the Seagulls snatched a point, ending the contest 2-2 and compounding Spurs’ growing struggles this season.
The result was another damaging blow for Tottenham. With the club currently languishing in the relegation zone, maximum points were essential to boost their survival hopes.
Instead, the draw leaves their Premier League status hanging in the balance with just five games remaining.
However, the fallout from the match has extended far beyond the pitch. In the hours following the game, sections of supporters took to social media platforms to direct racist abuse at Danso, sparking outrage and swift condemnation from the North London club.
In an official statement, Tottenham did not mince words, revealing the extent of the abuse and expressing firm solidarity with their player.
“Since yesterday’s fixture against Brighton, which took place during the Premier League’s No Room For Racism weekend, Kevin Danso has been, and continues to be, subject to significant and abhorrent racist abuse on social media.”

Spurs to Report Abuse to Authorities
Tottenham further confirmed that they are taking immediate and necessary steps to address the situation, including involving law enforcement agencies.
“The club is taking immediate action. We are reporting all identified content to the Metropolitan Police and to the appropriate authorities in the country where perpetrators reside, as well as to relevant social media platforms. We will push for the strongest possible action against each and every person we identify.”

The statement also underscored the severity of the abuse, describing it as “vile” and “dehumanising,” and emphasizing that such behaviour constitutes a “criminal offense” that must not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Danso, who has been a key figure in Tottenham’s defensive setup especially in the absence of skipper Christian Romero, has received unwavering backing from the club. Spurs made it clear that the defender will not face this ordeal alone.
“Kevin has our complete and unconditional support as a player and as a person. No one at this club will ever stand alone in the face of this.”

League Form Attracts Criticism
Beyond the disturbing off-field incidents, Tottenham’s on-field performances continue to draw heavy criticism.
The North London side currently sit 18th in the table and are in real danger of relegation.
Their predicament has been building over time rather than arising suddenly. Spurs are yet to register a single league victory in the 2026 calendar year, making them the only side in the division without a win during this period.
A run of 15 consecutive league matches without victory stretches back to December 2025, when they secured a narrow 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. Since then, inconsistency, defensive lapses, and missed opportunities have defined their campaign.
With just five matches left, the pressure is mounting. Tottenham must find a way to halt their slide and secure enough points to preserve their top-flight status.
Relegation would mark a historic collapse for a club that has been ever-present in the Premier League since its rebranding in 1992.
