Chelsea’s hopes of securing a top-five finish in the Premier League suffered another damaging blow after a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at the American Express Stadium (Amex), a result that dragged the London side into an alarming chapter of its history.
The loss marked a fifth consecutive Premier League defeat without scoring for Chelsea, matching their worst such run that came 114 years ago. Across the current losing streak, the Blues have conceded 11 goals while failing to find the net, underlining a collapse at both ends of the pitch during a crucial phase of the season.
With seven defeats in their last eight matches across all competitions, Chelsea’s form has unraveled at the worst possible time. They now sit seventh on 48 points, level with Brentford and AFC Bournemouth, and could slip further down the table depending on results elsewhere at the weekend.

Their push for UEFA Champions League football is now hanging by a thread.
Brighton Expose Toothless Chelsea
At the Amex Stadium, Brighton produced a sharp and disciplined display, taking control from the opening minutes. Ferdi Kadioglu opened the scoring in just the third minute, punishing a sluggish Chelsea start and setting the tone for the evening.
Chelsea struggled to respond with any real attacking threat. They lacked urgency, creativity, and cutting edge in the final third. In a telling statistic, the visitors failed to register a single shot on target throughout the entire match, highlighting the depth of their attacking issues.

Brighton continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their lead in the second half through Jack Hinshelwood, who finished off a swift counter-attacking move after Chelsea committed bodies forward in search of an equaliser.
As the game stretched, Danny Welbeck added a third in stoppage time to seal a commanding victory, capping a performance that exposed Chelsea’s fragility in both defence and attack.
Rosenior Slams “Unacceptable” Performance
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior did not hold back in his assessment of the performance, delivering a blunt and critical verdict after the match.
“It was unacceptable in every aspect. I keep coming out to defend the players. That was indefensible tonight.”

Rosenior also admitted that urgent changes are required if the team is to arrest its alarming slide. “Something needs to change drastically right now and we need to look in the mirror. I need to look in the mirror,” he added, acknowledging both collective and personal responsibility.
The Chelsea boss further questioned the mentality within his squad, making it clear that the standards at the club cannot be compromised. “You are playing for Chelsea, I am managing Chelsea and if you can’t handle that, you shouldn’t be here,” he stated, before reiterating “That was an unacceptable performance.”
Defensive Woes Compound Crisis
Beyond the attacking struggles, Chelsea’s defensive record has also raised serious concerns. The team has managed just one clean sheet in their last 13 league matches and has gone 12 games without one since a 2-0 victory over Brentford FC in January.

Their current five-game losing streak, which includes defeats to Newcastle United, Everton FC, Manchester City, Manchester United and Brighton, reflects a side struggling for structure, confidence, and identity.
With the season entering its final stretch, pressure continues to mount on Chelsea to find solutions quickly. A turnaround remains possible, but their current trajectory suggests an uphill battle to secure Champions League football.
Unless there is a significant improvement in both attacking output and defensive organisation, this run risks being remembered as one of the most difficult periods in the club’s modern history, defined by poor performances, damaging results, and unwanted records.
