Real Madrid interim head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has criticized match officials following his side’s frustrating draw against Real Betis in La Liga on Friday night.
Madrid looked on course for all three points after Vinicius Junior handed Los Blancos the lead in the first half. The Brazilian forward finished off a well-worked move, giving the visitors control of proceedings for large spells of the match.
However, Betis struck late in added time through Hector Bellerin, whose effort ensured the hosts salvaged a point. The late equalizer stunned Madrid, who had appeared to be managing the game effectively as the clock ticked down.

Arbeloa, speaking after the match, did not hide his frustration, particularly with what he viewed as key refereeing decisions that went against his side during crucial moments of the encounter.

The Madrid boss specifically highlighted an incident in the penalty area where he believed his side should have been awarded a spot kick. A shot appeared to strike the arm of a Betis defender, but no penalty was given by referee Soto Grado.“It was clear penalty on that handball,” he bemoaned referencing the handball incident.
Arbeloa also took issue with the sequence leading up to Betis’ equalizer, arguing that a foul had been committed in the buildup. According to him, the goal should not have stood due to an infringement on Ferland Mendy. “It was also a clear foul on Mendy in their goal.”
His frustration extended beyond this single match, as he suggested a pattern of controversial decisions affecting his team in recent fixtures.“It’s not the first time things like this happen.”
The draw leaves Madrid in a precarious position in the title race. They could fall as much as eleven points behind rivals FC Barcelona, who are currently leading the standings and showing consistency in the closing stretch of the season.
With roughly eight matches left to play, the gap may prove too large to close, especially with Barcelona maintaining strong form under head coach Hansi Flick as they push to defend their title.
The broader picture paints an even more concerning scenario for Real Madrid. The club is now staring at the possibility of ending the campaign without silverware for the first time since the 2020/21 season under Zinedine Zidane.
Such an outcome would underline the scale of the challenge facing Arbeloa and his squad, particularly given the high expectations that surround the club every season. Arbeloa, who stepped into the role following the departure of Xabi Alonso in January, has overseen a mixed but competitive run.
