Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has announced the formation of a seven-member committee to spearhead a comprehensive investigation into the recent fire incident at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) facility at Akosombo substation.
This move, aimed at uncovering the definitive root cause of the power infrastructure failure, represents a decisive step by the Ministry to restore stability and address the systemic vulnerabilities that led to the event.
The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to accountability while ensuring that immediate efforts to restore power remain the primary operational focus.
“The situation that we need to get to the bottom of. We’re going to get experts to serve on that committee, from the National Security, from the Energy Commission, and other institutions that would help us to conduct a detailed investigation. We think that within two weeks to three weeks, they should be ready with a report, so that we can get to the root cause of this challenge and all the other issues surrounding this very, very unfortunate incident.”

To broaden the investigative scope, the Ministry has integrated high-level expertise from across the energy and security sectors, including representatives from the National Security and the Energy Commission.
The committee will be chaired by an experienced engineer who previously served as a chief executive and currently holds the position of Board Chair for the Electricity Company of Ghana.
According to Ministry officials, this diverse panel is expected to finalize its investigative report within a two-to-three-week window, providing the necessary clarity to resolve the challenges surrounding this unfortunate incident.
A Necessary Framework for Infrastructure Resilience

The assembly of this committee is a critical requirement to avert the recurrence of such incidences, as it transitions the sector from mere emergency response to proactive forensic analysis.
In technical infrastructure management, establishing a dedicated, multi-agency committee is the standard method for isolating the “root cause” whether it stems from equipment failure, maintenance backlogs, or operational oversight.
By involving independent experts, the Ministry ensures that the investigative process is immune to internal bias, allowing for a credible audit of the technical failures involved.
This structured oversight is essential for hardening critical assets against future fires or mechanical breakdowns, ensuring the national grid remains a reliable engine for economic activity.
Operational Urgency and Restoration

While the investigative committee works on identifying the long-term technical causes, the Ministry has underscored that the “immediate focus is restoration of power.”
Engineers have been working “around the clock” to address the supply gap, with chief executives from critical institutions actively involved in onsite management.
This dual-track approach balancing emergency service recovery with a systematic, evidence-based inquiry reflects the Ministry’s intent to manage the crisis without compromising on safety or due diligence.
Such measures are vital for maintaining public confidence in the face of what the Minister described as a “very, very unfortunate incident.”
Driving Future Energy Security

Beyond the current crisis, this investigative initiative serves as a foundational step toward broader sector reform. The report generated by this committee is expected to outline specific gaps in existing safety protocols, effectively acting as a blueprint for future capital investments in grid infrastructure.
As the Ministry continues to prioritize the “Green Transition,” ensuring that existing assets are robust and secure is paramount.
By documenting the lessons learned from this fire, the government aims to codify new standards of operational excellence, thereby ensuring that the nation’s energy future is built on a foundation of proven reliability rather than reactive patches.
