Chief Executive of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, has called on staff to draw inspiration from the hospital’s progress and remain committed to doing more to improve healthcare delivery, urging the institution to work toward becoming a better place for patients, staff and stakeholders alike.
Dr Adam made the call during the hospital’s 2026 Mid-Year Performance Review, an event that brought together members of management, various directorates and staff to assess the institution’s overall performance during the first half of the year.
Describing the Performance Review as an important institutional platform, Dr Adam explained that the exercise was designed to allow the hospital to take stock of its progress, account for achievements recorded during the period, identify existing challenges, and collectively work toward practical solutions for issues affecting the delivery of quality healthcare.
He encouraged staff to make frank, honest and constructive submissions throughout the review process, stressing that open discussion and critical self-assessment remain essential tools for strengthening the hospital’s performance and improving day-to-day operations across its various directorates.
Dr Adam highlighted several notable achievements recorded by the hospital during the review period, including the stabilisation of oxygen supply across the facility, the establishment of a functional catheterisation laboratory (Cath Lab) at the National Cardiothoracic Centre, and the installation of a new X-ray machine. He also cited the successful performance of kidney and cornea transplantation services as significant milestones for the institution.
While acknowledging these achievements as important markers of progress, Dr Adam was careful to stress that they should serve primarily as motivation for management and staff to pursue even greater accomplishments, rather than as a basis for complacency.
Priorities Outlined for the Hospital’s Development
Looking at the hospital’s development agenda, Dr Adam outlined several priorities the institution intends to pursue, including the completion of ongoing infrastructural projects, strengthening the staff shuttle system, and enhancing medical care benefits available to staff members.
He further disclosed plans to expand In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) services, advance a staff accommodation project, introduce a robotic surgical system, and establish a dedicated Corporate Clinic within the hospital.
He also revealed ongoing plans to collaborate with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to acquire critical medical imaging equipment, including a mammogram machine, a CT scanner and an MRI machine, describing these acquisitions as important steps toward strengthening the hospital’s overall diagnostic capacity.
Directorate Presentations and Staff Engagement
As part of the review process, various directorates within the hospital were given the opportunity to present detailed accounts of their activities and performance for the period under review.
These presentations covered key outputs, achievements recorded, concerns raised, challenges encountered and proposed next steps for improving operations within their respective units.
Staff in attendance were also given the opportunity to seek clarification on issues raised during the presentations, as well as to offer their own suggestions for improving hospital operations, reflecting the participatory nature of the review exercise.
New Maternity Block Construction to Begin
Among the specific project updates shared during the review, Dr Adam announced that construction of the hospital’s new maternity block would commence soon, disclosing that contractors had already been formally introduced to the project site, marking a significant step toward the actual commencement of construction work.
In his concluding remarks, Dr Adam urged staff to remain firmly committed to the hospital’s collective vision of continuous improvement, stressing that the progress already achieved should serve as inspiration for everyone within the institution to strive for even more.
