The Government of Ghana has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Mali following a wave of coordinated attacks that have heightened tensions across the Sahel region.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authorities extended solidarity to the Malian government and people while issuing a strong advisory to Ghanaian nationals within the affected areas. The statement, released in Accra on April 27, 2026, comes in the wake of large-scale attacks carried out on April 25 across several strategic locations in Mali, including the capital, Bamako.

The attacks targeted military positions and key installations, marking one of the most significant escalations in the country’s ongoing security crisis. The Government of Ghana described the incidents as deeply troubling, particularly given the reported loss of lives, including that of Mali’s Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, along with other military personnel and civilians. Reports indicate that the attacks were part of a coordinated offensive involving armed groups operating across multiple regions in the country.

Ghana Condemns Violent Extremism

In its statement, Ghana strongly condemned acts of violent extremism, stressing that such incidents have no place in modern society. The government called for strengthened collective efforts at both regional and international levels to combat terrorism and restore peace across the Sahel.

Officials noted that the scale and coordination of the attacks highlight the growing complexity of security challenges in the region. Armed groups reportedly launched simultaneous assaults on military bases and urban centres, underscoring the persistent threat posed by extremist networks.

The Government emphasised the importance of unity among African nations in addressing insecurity, reiterating its commitment to supporting peace and stability efforts within the West African sub-region.

Government Advises Ghanaians to Exercise Caution

As part of its response, Ghana issued a safety advisory to its citizens living in or travelling through Mali. The Ministry urged Ghanaians to exercise extreme caution and limit non-essential movements until the situation stabilises.

Citizens were also encouraged to maintain regular contact with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Bamako to receive updates and support where necessary. The advisory reflects growing concerns over the unpredictability of the security environment, particularly in areas affected by recent violence.

Additionally, Ghanaian traders and transport operators who frequently use routes within Mali for commercial activities have been advised to temporarily suspend their movements. Authorities noted that these measures are necessary to safeguard lives while security operations continue.

Ghana Reaffirms Diplomatic Support

The Government of Ghana extended its condolences to the people and leadership of Mali, describing the attacks as a tragic development that has resulted in significant loss and suffering. It also wished those injured a speedy recovery.

Ghana further indicated that it is working closely with Malian authorities and other relevant stakeholders to monitor the situation and facilitate the eventual resumption of normal activities, including cross-border trade.Officials stressed that Ghana remains committed to protecting the welfare of its citizens abroad and will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.

The press release also underscored Ghana’s longstanding diplomatic ties with Mali, highlighting the importance of cooperation in addressing shared security challenges. As part of broader regional efforts, Ghana has consistently supported initiatives aimed at promoting peace, stability, and development across West Africa.

The recent attacks, described as among the most coordinated in recent years, have raised alarms within the international community. Armed groups reportedly targeted multiple cities simultaneously, demonstrating a high level of organisation and capability.

Despite these challenges, Ghana reaffirmed its solidarity with Mali, emphasising that the safety and well-being of both Ghanaians abroad and citizens within the region remain a top priority. As the situation continues to unfold, the Government has assured the public that it will remain vigilant and proactive in responding to developments.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its commitment to engaging international partners and regional bodies to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and preventing further escalation. The advisory serves as both a warning and a reassurance, highlighting the seriousness of the situation while affirming Ghana’s readiness to act in the interest of its citizens and regional stability.
