Hon. John Jinapor

Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, led by Hon. John Jinapor, has announced a major strategic initiative to deploy 2,500 transformers across Kumasi to tackle the persistent challenges of electricity supply reliability.

This nationwide transformer upgrade and replacement programme is designed to alleviate the strain on the regional power grid, directly addressing the systemic issues that have historically plagued the sector.

By modernizing critical infrastructure, the government aims to ensure a more consistent and stable flow of electricity to homes and businesses, marking a pivotal step toward stabilizing the power network in the Ashanti Region.

“In all, we seek to deploy 2,500 transformers to improve supply reliability in Kumasi in June. And what we’ve decided is that we should allow the World Cup to pass. After that, we’ll zoom in to do the transmission works.”

This massive deployment effort comes as a direct response to a decade of escalating demand that has more than doubled, further compounded by years of systemic under-investment.

As Hon. Jinapor explained, this neglect has manifested in frequent “overloads, low voltages, and recurring outages” throughout the power distribution network.

To mitigate these immediate failures, the government has already initiated an emergency intervention, successfully installing almost 200 transformers within the current month alone. Looking ahead, the government plans to complement these installations with targeted transmission and distribution line upgrades.

According to the Minister, “advances will move to Kumasi this very week to commence work on the distribution lines,” while a critical component currently being airlifted by Senate Energy Limited is expected to arrive soon to further “strengthen the generation network in partnership with GRIDCo.”

The Role of Transformers in Grid Restoration

The primary function of these new transformers is to facilitate effective voltage regulation and load balancing across the Kumasi power network.

When electrical demand exceeds the capacity of existing infrastructure, transformers become the bottleneck, leading to the low-voltage conditions and frequent tripping mentioned by the Ministry.

By replacing aging or undersized units with higher-capacity, modern transformers, the grid can better manage peak loads without compromising performance.

These devices act as a critical buffer, adjusting voltage levels to safe operating ranges, which protects both the distribution equipment and the end-user’s appliances from surges and damage.

Furthermore, modern, high-efficiency transformers help minimize energy losses during the distribution process, ensuring that the power generated at the source reaches consumers with maximum efficiency, thereby directly contributing to a more robust and responsive power supply.

Addressing Infrastructure Deficits

The government’s approach recognizes that transformer deployment is only one piece of a complex energy puzzle. The planned works in Kumasi also focus heavily on transmission and distribution line maintenance.

The Minister noted a strategic timeline for these secondary improvements, stating that the government has decided to “allow the World Cup to pass” before they “zoom in to do the transmission works.“

This calculated, phased approach ensures that immediate relief provided by the deployment of the initial 200 units and the impending 140 units specifically targeted for Tamale is maintained while preparations are finalized for more extensive, long-term technical overhauls of the transmission system.

Strategic Strengthening for Future Growth

Beyond immediate repairs, this initiative signals a shift toward a more proactive, sustainable energy infrastructure.

The collaboration between the Ministry, GRIDCo, and private entities highlights a multi-faceted effort to stabilize the generation and distribution chain.

By integrating these technical upgrades with a commitment to addressing the legacy of under-investment, the government aims to create a resilient energy environment capable of supporting Kumasi’s economic growth for the next decade.

As these 2,500 transformers are systematically brought online throughout June, the cumulative effect is expected to be a significant reduction in the frequency of outages and an overall improvement in the quality of power supplied to the populace.
