Vincent Kompany has moved to temper the conversation surrounding Mikel Arteta’s recent comments on league intensity, insisting the Arsenal manager’s remarks should be viewed as part of a broader discussion rather than criticism of the leagues in Germany or France.

The Bayern Munich boss was speaking ahead of his side’s UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain, with the German champions trailing 5-4 from a dramatic first-leg encounter. “I don’t want to comment much on that. I played in the Premier League for many years,” Kompany said, referencing his time with Manchester City.

He maintained that Arteta’s perspective was rooted in experience rather than dismissal of other leagues. “I don’t think it was meant as a criticism of Bayern or PSG, but rather a discussion,” he added.

Kompany also pointed to the demanding structure of English football, highlighting the volume of fixtures as a key difference. “In England, you have 38 league games, the league cup, FA Cup, no winter break,” he explained.

The Belgian further noted that such concerns are not new, recalling how former Liverpool FC manager Jürgen Klopp repeatedly raised similar issues during his time in England.

Arteta’s Remarks Ignite Intensity Debate

Arteta’s comments came after the thrilling first leg between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain in France, a game widely noted for its relentless pace and attacking quality.

The Arsenal manager suggested that such high-octane football is more sustainable for teams in leagues like the Bundesliga and Ligue 1, where he believes the overall intensity is lower than in the Premier League.

According to Arteta, his side cannot “consistently play with that same level” of attacking risk due to the physical demands of English football, where the congested calendar also forces a more measured approach.

His remarks have since fueled a wider debate about whether the Premier League’s intensity ultimately limits English clubs in Europe or better prepares them for elite competition.

PSG To Maintain Attacking Mindset For Second Leg

While the discussion continues off the pitch, PSG manager Luis Enrique has made it clear his side will not alter their philosophy despite carrying a narrow advantage.

“As a team, we have the same objective away from home as we do at home. We don’t need to defend the result because the objective is to win.”

The Spaniard emphasized that PSG’s focus remains firmly on victory rather than simply protecting their lead. “It’s a challenge, we want to win the game, not just go through,” he added.

That approach sets up another potentially explosive encounter that will mirror the first leg previously highlighted as one of the standout matches of the competition.
