Global pop superstar Dua Lipa has taken legal action against electronics giant Samsung, filing a high-profile $15 million lawsuit accusing the company of exploiting her likeness without permission to boost television sales.
The complaint was filed on Friday, May 8, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
At the heart of the dispute is a copyrighted photograph of Lipa taken backstage at the 2024 Austin City Limits Festival. According to the lawsuit, Samsung used this image prominently on the cardboard packaging of various TV models, particularly Crystal UHD models, as part of a widespread mass-market retail campaign that began last year.
The photo appeared on boxes sold across the United States, creating what Lipa’s legal team describes as a false impression that the singer was endorsing Samsung products.
Dua Lipa is an English-Albanian singer, songwriter, and model who rose to international prominence with hits like “New Rules,” “Levitating,” and “Don’t Start Now.” Known for her “disco-pop” sound, she has won three Grammy Awards and seven Brit Awards.
Lipa, who owns the copyright to the image, alleges she had no knowledge of or involvement in the campaign. She became aware of the unauthorized use in June 2025 and promptly demanded that Samsung cease and desist.
The complaint states that her team sent multiple requests, but Samsung’s response was “dismissive and callous.” Despite these objections, the company allegedly continued distributing and selling the infringing packaging.
“Ms. Lipa’s face was prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without consideration, and as to which she had no say, control, or input whatsoever. Ms. Lipa did not allow and would not have allowed this use.”
Quote from the lawsuit filed by Dua Lipa
The 30-year-old Grammy-winning artist, known for her carefully curated brand and selective endorsement deals, is seeking at least $15 million in damages for copyright infringement, trademark infringement, false endorsement, and violation of her right of publicity.

She is also requesting a permanent injunction to prevent further use of her image, along with Samsung’s profits from the sales, punitive damages, and attorney fees.
Public Reactions
The filing highlights how the unauthorized use allegedly misled consumers. It quotes several social media posts from buyers who admitted the image influenced their purchases.
One user reportedly said, “I was not even planning on buying a tv but I saw the box so I decided to get it,” while another commented, “If you need anything selling just put a picture of Dua Lipa on it.”

Legal experts note that this case underscores growing tensions around celebrity image rights in the digital and retail age. Lipa has built a “premium brand” and is highly selective with partnerships.
The lawsuit argues that Samsung’s actions deprived her of the ability to control and monetize her likeness while profiting from an implied association. “Samsung is infringing conduct using Ms. Lipa’s assets for zero consideration makes a mockery of her hard work in establishing a successful brand,” the complaint adds.
The story has exploded on social media, with fans sharing memes of the TV boxes and expressing strong support for Lipa’s decision to protect her rights.
Many view it as a stand against corporate overreach in using celebrity images without consent, especially as AI and digital reproduction make such misuse easier.
Samsung has not yet issued a public comment on the lawsuit. The case remains in its early stages, with a jury trial demanded.
Dua Lipa continues her global dominance in music, with sold-out tours and chart-topping releases.
This legal battle adds another layer to her public profile, highlighting the challenges artists face in safeguarding their personal brand amid commercial exploitation.
The outcome could set a notable precedent for how companies interact with celebrity likenesses in everyday retail packaging.
