Ghana’s Black Princesses have been handed a daunting task at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after being drawn in a difficult Group C alongside France, Korea Republic and Ecuador.
The draw for the 12th edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup took place in Lodz, Poland, setting up a number of fascinating encounters ahead of the tournament scheduled for September.
The Black Princesses secured qualification for the mundial after defeating Uganda’s Queen Cranes 3-2 on aggregate to book an eighth consecutive appearance at the global women’s tournament.
Ghana remains one of Africa’s most consistent representatives at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, although the team is still chasing a breakthrough beyond the group stage.

This year’s draw presents another stern challenge for the West Africans as they come up against two nations with strong histories in the competition, while also facing one of the tournament’s debutants in Ecuador.
France and Korea Republic Present Major Test
France head into the competition as one of the favourites in Group C following their impressive history at the tournament. The European side finished as runners-up at the 2014 edition in Canada before claiming bronze two years later in Papua New Guinea.
Korea Republic also carry significant pedigree into the group. The Asians achieved their best-ever finish in 2010 when they secured bronze in Germany and have steadily improved in subsequent appearances on the global stage.
For Ghana, the draw represents another opportunity to finally break the long-standing barrier of the group phase after seven previous appearances at the tournament without progressing to the knockout stage.
Ecuador, meanwhile, will be making their debut appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and could prove unpredictable opponents in a group many observers already consider one of the toughest at the tournament.
The Black Princesses will hope their recent qualification campaign and growing experience at youth level can help them compete strongly against the elite opposition awaiting them in Poland.
Results of the Draw
Hosts Poland were drawn in Group A alongside Argentina, Benin and Mexico, while reigning champions Korea DPR headline Group E where they will face Colombia, Costa Rica and Portugal.
Group B features Brazil, England, Canada and Tanzania, with Group D pairing Japan, USA, New Zealand and Italy in another heavyweight section.
In Group F, Spain will battle Nigeria, China PR and New Caledonia for a place in the knockout stage.
Several repeat fixtures from previous tournaments are also expected to generate excitement during the competition. France previously faced Korea Republic in the group stage at Costa Rica 2022, with Les Bleuettes emerging 1-0 winners.
Brazil also defeated Canada 2-0 at Costa Rica 2024, while Korea DPR recorded a commanding 9-0 victory over Costa Rica at the same tournament. Japan, meanwhile, boast recent victories over USA at both the 2018 and 2022 editions.
The 2026 tournament will also feature several first-time participants, including Benin, Ecuador, New Caledonia, hosts Poland, Portugal and Tanzania, highlighting the continued growth of women’s football across the globe.
Korea DPR and USA will each be targeting a record fourth FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title when the tournament kicks off later this year.
The immediate focus for Ghana will be to navigate a demanding Group C and attempting to make history by reaching the knockout rounds for the very first time.

The Black Princesses have consistently demonstrated resilience on the African stage, and after overcoming Uganda’s Queen Cranes to secure qualification once again, they will now hope to translate that success onto the world stage against some of the strongest nations in women’s youth football.
