Premier League giants Chelsea FC have officially confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The Spaniard has signed a four-year contract with the Blues, a deal that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2030 as Chelsea begin a new era under one of the highly-rated young tacticians.

The English club confirmed the appointment in an official statement published on their website, expressing excitement over securing one of Europe’s most admired young managers. “Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Manager of the men’s team,” the statement read.

The statement further revealed that Alonso will officially assume his duties at the beginning of July as preparations intensify for the new campaign. “The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge.”

Alonso Arrives With Elite Coaching Pedigree

Alonso joins Chelsea after already building an impressive managerial résumé across some of Europe’s biggest football environments.

The former midfielder gained widespread recognition during his time with Bayer 04 Leverkusen in Germany before taking charge of Real Madrid CF in Spain.

At Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso guided the club to the first Bundesliga title in their history during the remarkable 2023/24 season. Under his leadership, the German side completed the entire domestic league campaign unbeaten, and won the DFP Pokal as well, a historic achievement that further elevated his reputation among Europe’s elite coaches.

Chelsea explained that Alonso’s appointment was influenced not only by his tactical qualities but also by his leadership and vision for the future of the club.

“His appointment reflects the Club’s belief in his broad set of experiences, coaching quality and game model, leadership attributes, character and integrity, which were key to the decision to ask him to help lead the next phase of Chelsea’s journey.”

The London club believes Alonso possesses the qualities needed to restore Chelsea’s status among Europe’s elite after struggling this season and guide a talented young squad towards consistent success both domestically and internationally.

Alonso Excited to Lead Chelsea

Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Alonso expressed pride and excitement at being handed the opportunity to manage one of the world’s biggest football clubs. “Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” Alonso said.

The former Spanish international also highlighted the positive conversations he had with the club’s ownership and sporting leadership, insisting that they share the same ambitions for Chelsea’s future.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”

Alonso further praised the quality already present within the squad and stressed his determination to create a winning culture at Stamford Bridge. “There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”

A Stellar Playing Career

Before transitioning into coaching, Alonso enjoyed one of the most decorated playing careers of his generation.
