The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has fully resumed emergency admissions after a temporary suspension caused by severe congestion at its Accident and Emergency Centre.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr (Med.) Frank Amoakohene confirmed the development following a briefing from the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, noting that the facility is now fully operational after the pressure on the emergency unit was successfully managed.

The suspension had been introduced earlier after the centre exceeded its operational capacity, forcing hospital authorities to halt new admissions temporarily to prevent further strain on services.

Coordinated Response to Ease Pressure

According to Dr Amoakohene, a coordinated intervention was immediately activated upon receiving reports of the congestion. This involved collaboration between the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate and leadership of health facilities across the region.

The strategy focused on redistributing emergency cases to other hospitals to ensure continuity of care for patients while easing pressure on the KATH emergency unit.

“I have just been briefed by the CEO of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital that the facility has fully resumed operations following the temporary congestion experienced at its Accident and Emergency Centre”.

He added that the swift response from health authorities and partner facilities helped restore normal operations within a short period. “I thank the management and staff of KATH, the Regional Health Directorate, and all partner health facilities for their swift response and collaboration,” he said.

Renewed Focus on Health Infrastructure

Dr Amoakohene said the incident highlights the urgent need to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve referral systems across the Ashanti Region.

He stressed that government is committed to expanding health facilities to reduce pressure on major referral hospitals such as KATH, which continues to serve patients from across the country.

According to him, several major health infrastructure projects are underway to address long standing capacity challenges within the region’s healthcare system.

These include the resumption of construction work on the KNUST Medical Centre, supported with over GHS 400 million in funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund, as well as ongoing work on a new catheterisation laboratory facility at KATH aimed at improving specialist cardiac care.

Expansion of Regional Health Facilities

The Regional Minister also referenced broader efforts to improve healthcare delivery through the completion and operationalisation of key health projects across the Ashanti Region.

“Central Government will, in due course, communicate an update and a roadmap for the completion and operationalisation of the Sewua Regional Hospital, Afari Military Hospital, and outline progress on other key health installations within the region”.

Dr Amoakohene emphasised that ongoing investments in health infrastructure are essential to building a resilient healthcare system capable of meeting growing demand in the Ashanti Region and across Ghana.

He explained that improving access to quality healthcare requires not only expansion of physical infrastructure but also strengthened coordination between referral facilities and regional health services.

He expressed confidence that the combined effect of ongoing projects and improved management systems will significantly reduce congestion challenges and improve emergency response capacity in the future.

“Government remains committed to building a resilient healthcare system that meets the growing needs of the Ashanti Region and Ghana as a whole,” he said.

Situation Under Control

With emergency services now fully restored at KATH, health authorities say they will continue to monitor patient flow and strengthen coordination mechanisms to prevent a recurrence of the congestion.

The development brings relief to residents who depend on the facility for critical care, while also renewing attention on the broader need for sustained investment in Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure.
