The Government, through the Ministry of the Interior and the Ghana Police Service, has provided financial assistance to families affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Accra Central Police Barracks, as part of immediate relief efforts following the disaster.
Interior Minister Hon. Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak announced that each affected family has received GH₵15,000 to support urgent needs arising from the fire, which displaced several households and destroyed residential structures within the barracks.
The announcement was made during a visit by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang on Friday, June 5, 2026, to assess the extent of damage and engage with affected families and officials coordinating the response.
According to the Minister, the financial support is intended to help victims purchase clothing, food, and other essential items lost in the fire, while broader recovery measures are being prepared.
Additional Support from AMA
Hon. Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak further disclosed that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has contributed GH₵120,000 to support ongoing relief operations coordinated by the Interior Ministry and the Ghana Police Service.

He explained that the distribution of funds followed a structured assessment process designed to ensure fairness and equity among affected families.
“We were able to extend, together with the Police Service, about GH₵15,000 to each affected family to enable them to buy clothes and other essentials. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly also provided GH₵120,000 to the Police Service to further support the victims”.

Authorities say the combined support is aimed at addressing immediate humanitarian needs while longer-term reconstruction plans are developed for the barracks. The fire occurred on the night of June 3, 2026, at the Accra Central Police Barracks, causing extensive damage to several residential units.
The blaze displaced numerous families and triggered a rapid response from security services, fire personnel, and disaster management teams who worked to contain the situation and support victims.
The scale of destruction has raised concerns about safety standards and emergency preparedness in public residential facilities, particularly those housing security personnel and their families.
Temporary Accommodation and Reconstruction Plans
Government has indicated that arrangements are underway to provide temporary accommodation for all displaced families while reconstruction plans for the damaged structures are finalized.

The Interior Minister noted that additional relief interventions, including cash support and material assistance, will continue in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation.
Authorities are also considering measures to improve infrastructure safety and reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future. The reconstruction process is expected to include upgraded safety systems and improved residential facilities within the barracks.
Hon. Muntaka praised the Inspector General of Police, the Police Management Board, and the Ghana National Fire Service for their swift response to the fire outbreak.
He noted that the coordinated efforts of the emergency services helped limit further damage and ensured that victims received timely assistance. The Minister assured affected families of government’s continued commitment to supporting them throughout the recovery process.
As part of his visit, the Interior Minister also checked on a police officer who sustained injuries during the fire and is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.
He expressed concern over the officer’s condition and commended medical personnel for their care and professionalism. Hon. Muntaka assured the officer of government support and encouraged him to focus on recovery.
Ongoing Recovery Efforts
Government officials say the relief package represents the first phase of a broader response plan aimed at restoring normalcy and rebuilding damaged infrastructure at the Accra Central Police Barracks.

With temporary housing arrangements underway and reconstruction plans in development, authorities have assured victims that support will continue until full recovery is achieved.
The intervention reflects a coordinated national effort to address the immediate impact of the fire while strengthening resilience and safety within public residential facilities.
