The Vice President of Ghana, Her Excellency Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, has called for a thorough assessment of the conditions that led to the devastating fire outbreak at the Accra Central Market area. She said the incident should prompt authorities to examine long standing structural and safety concerns while ensuring support for affected residents.
During a visit to the scene, the Vice President raised concerns about the condition of the affected building. She noted that the disaster presents an opportunity for stakeholders to investigate factors that may have contributed to the incident.
The Vice President further observed that many victims had lost valuable property in the fire. She added that some children may have experienced emotional distress, making the welfare of affected families a priority for government and relief agencies.
Additionally, Her Excellency commended emergency responders and public officials for their swift intervention. She praised the Greater Accra Regional Minister, the Minister of Interior, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the Police Service, and the Ghana National Fire Service for their efforts in preventing a greater tragedy.

Professor Agyemang explained that the preservation of life is the most significant outcome of the emergency response. She therefore encouraged institutions to focus on preventive measures that could reduce future disasters.
The Vice President also called for a detailed evaluation of the building involved in the fire. She said authorities must determine how long the structure has been vulnerable and whether regulations have adequately been enforced.
She urged officials to establish occupancy levels and examine compliance with safety requirements. She emphasised that the findings from the assessment would guide future planning and policy decisions.
According to her, development projects must always prioritise public safety. She added that rebuilding efforts should be informed by technical assessments and lessons drawn from the incident.

Relief Support And Investigations To Determine Cause

The emergency supplies include over 100 bags of rice, 300 mosquito nets, 300 blankets, two bales of clothing, and 100 mattresses. She said the items have been provided for immediate use by affected households as recovery efforts continued. She also urged disaster management agencies to ensure the prompt distribution of the supplies.

She explained that speculation must give way to professional findings from investigators. Such an approach, she said, would help authorities understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify lessons for the future.
The Vice President observed that property loss can have lasting effects on families. She noted that many people spend years building livelihoods and acquiring possessions, making recovery particularly difficult after disasters. She also called on citizens to respect occupancy regulations and safety standards while noting that rules are designed to protect lives and property during emergencies.
