On  June 4, 2026, legendary actor Keith David knelt beside his newly unveiled star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking not only a pinnacle career achievement but also a deeply personal celebration of his 70th birthday.

The 2,847th star in the Motion Pictures category, installed at 6225 Hollywood Boulevard near the Pantages Theatre, honors a performer whose commanding presence, resonant voice, and versatile talent have enriched film, television, theater, and animation for nearly five decades.

The ceremony drew an impressive array of speakers and well-wishers, reflecting the breadth of David’s impact. Actress and producer Ryan Michelle Bathe served as emcee. Tributes came from Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, actress Lynn Whitfield, director John Carpenter, and actor John C. McGinley.

Friends, family including David’s wife Dionne Lea Williams and daughters and industry colleagues gathered to witness the moment.

Born Keith David Williams on June 4, 1956, in Harlem and raised in Queens, New York, David discovered his passion for performance early. He attended Manhattan’s High School of Performing Arts and graduated from The Juilliard School in 1979 with a BFA in drama.

His professional journey began on stage, including Broadway appearances in productions like Jelly’s Last Jam, which earned him a Tony Award nomination.

David’s screen breakthrough arrived in 1982 with John Carpenter’s sci-fi horror classic The Thing, where he portrayed the pragmatic helicopter pilot Childs opposite Kurt Russell. The role showcased his ability to convey quiet intensity and moral complexity.

He reunited with Carpenter in 1988’s They Live, delivering the memorable line “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass… and I’m all out of bubblegum.” His performance as Sergeant Elias in Oliver Stone’s Oscar-winning Platoon (1986) further cemented his reputation for powerful dramatic work.

Notable Works

Over more than 400 credits, David has demonstrated extraordinary range. He appeared in acclaimed films such as Requiem for a Dream, Crash (which won the Best Picture Oscar), Dead Presidents, Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, Barbershop, Cloud Atlas, The Nice Guys, Nope, and American Fiction. On television, he delivered a standout performance as Bishop James Greenleaf in the OWN series Greenleaf and brought humor to NBC’s Community.

Perhaps equally iconic is his voice work. David’s deep, velvety bass has narrated multiple Ken Burns documentaries, earning him three Primetime Emmy Awards. Animation fans know him as Goliath in Disney’s Gargoyles, Dr. Facilier in The Princess and the Frog, and the Arbiter in the Halo video game series.

Additional credits span Spawn, Coraline, and numerous other projects across games, commercials, and audiobooks.40

In his acceptance speech, David grew emotional while reflecting on his journey. “What you’re bearing witness to today is a man living his dream,” he told the crowd.

He described acting as his “ministry,” an opportunity not just to work but to bring joy to others. He spoke of standing on the shoulders of giants who came before him, expressing humility and profound thanks.

Speakers highlighted David’s character and contributions. John Carpenter praised their collaborations and David’s professionalism.

Mayor Bass recognized his cultural impact and ties to Los Angeles. Lynn Whitfield and John C. McGinley offered personal anecdotes that highlighted his generosity and mentorship.

The star’s placement next to Nat King Cole’s whom David once portrayed added a poetic full-circle element, as noted by Hollywood Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez.

David has long viewed the honor philosophically. When announced as part of the 2026 class in 2025, he shared a surprised, heartfelt reaction video with his wife, calling the recognition “the cherry on top” of a blessed career.

The timing on his 70th birthday made it especially meaningful.

Far from slowing down, David continues to work steadily. He stars in FX’s The Lowdown alongside Ethan Hawke and NBC’s Sunset P.I. Upcoming projects reportedly include biopics of Frederick Douglass and Paul Robeson.

At 47 years into his career, he remains selective yet enthusiastic: “Ain’t nobody making me do it. Nobody is twisting my arm. Ask me, I might say yes!”

The ceremony underscored themes of perseverance, excellence, and legacy. In an industry often criticized for fleeting fame, David represents enduring craftsmanship. His star joins those of countless icons, ensuring that future generations walking Hollywood Boulevard will pause at 6225 and remember a voice and presence that shaped modern storytelling.

For Keith David, the star is more than pavement recognition-it is validation of a life devoted to the arts. As he rises from kneeling beside it, smiling broadly in photos shared widely on social media, one thing is clear: this Harlem-born talent has not only lived his dream but helped countless others dream bigger through his work.

At 70, Keith David’s story is far from over; it simply shines brighter.
