Ghana Premier League side, Asante Kotoko, have appointed former Netherlands international Stanley Menzo as the club’s new Director of Football, entrusting the experienced Dutch football figure with overseeing the Porcupine Warriors’ technical direction as they embark on a major rebuilding project ahead of next season.
The decision was made by the club’s Board of Directors on Monday, with Menzo taking up the position with immediate effect.
His appointment forms part of Kotoko’s long-term strategy aimed at strengthening technical leadership, modernising football operations and restoring the club to the summit of Ghanaian and African football.
The 62-year-old arrives in Kumasi with a wealth of experience accumulated across playing, coaching and football administration roles spanning Europe, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. He is expected to play a central role in shaping the club’s football identity and future sporting structure.
Kotoko believe Menzo’s extensive pedigree and international exposure make him the ideal candidate to drive the club’s football ambitions at a time when the record Ghana Premier League champions are seeking renewed success on both the domestic and continental fronts.
Distinguished Career in the Game
Menzo enjoyed an illustrious playing career, most notably with Ajax Amsterdam, where he spent ten seasons and made more than 300 appearances. During his time with the Dutch giants, he won nine major trophies and established himself as one of the most influential goalkeepers of his generation.
Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the modern ball-playing goalkeeper role, Menzo was celebrated for his ability to contribute to build-up play from the back, a style that helped redefine expectations of goalkeepers in world football.

He was also a full international for the Netherlands, representing his country at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy and at the European Championship.
His playing career further included spells with PSV Eindhoven, Lierse and Bordeaux, while he was part of the Ajax side that won the 1986-87 European Cup Winners’ Cup and the UEFA Cup in 1992.
Vast Coaching Experience
Following his retirement, Menzo embarked on an extensive coaching and management career that took him across three continents. He managed clubs including FC Volendam, SC Cambuur and Lierse in Europe, Ajax Cape Town in South Africa, and Beijing Guoan in China.
His international coaching experience includes spells with the national teams of Aruba and Suriname. Until December 2025, he was in charge of Suriname but stepped down after the country failed to secure automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ahead of Panama.

Menzo also served as goalkeeping coach of the Netherlands national team under Marco van Basten in 2004, further enhancing a résumé that combines elite-level playing and coaching experience.
Major Responsibilities Ahead
In his new position, Menzo will be responsible for the club’s overall football direction, including technical strategy, player recruitment and retention, youth development and the alignment of the academy and senior teams under a unified football philosophy.
The club has also confirmed that he will oversee all technical matters until the appointment of a substantive head coach for the senior side.

Speaking after his appointment, Menzo expressed excitement about joining one of Africa’s most decorated football institutions.
“It is an honour to join a club of the stature and history of Asante Kotoko. The passion of the supporters and the ambition of the leadership made this an easy decision. I look forward to working with the technical team, the players and the entire Kotoko family to build something special and to compete for the trophies this club deserves.”

The appointment marks another significant step in Kotoko’s restructuring efforts ahead of the new season, with the club expected to unveil further details regarding Menzo’s technical plans and backroom structure in the coming weeks.
Supporters will hope the arrival of the highly respected Dutchman signals the beginning of a new era capable of returning the Porcupine Warriors to their traditional place among Africa’s elite clubs especially after enduring a difficult time on the field during the just ended season.
