Jadon Sancho headlines a list of players set to leave Manchester United at the end of June, bringing an end to a turbulent spell at Old Trafford that never fully lived up to expectations.
Alongside Sancho, Brazilian midfielder Casemiro and Dutch left-back Tyrell Malacia have also been confirmed by the club as departing when their contracts expire later this month. The trio will leave as United continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new season.
Sancho departs as a free agent five years after arriving from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth £75 million in 2021. At the time, he was regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents and remains the fourth most expensive signings in Manchester United’s history.
The England international spent only two-and-a-half seasons playing for United, with the remainder of his contract largely consisting of loan spells away from the club.
Despite arriving with huge expectations, he struggled to establish himself as a consistent performer in Manchester and now leaves without the impact many had anticipated.
Loan Spells Define Final Years
Sancho’s United career took a significant turn in January 2024 when he returned to Borussia Dortmund on a six-month loan deal.
Back in familiar surroundings, he rediscovered some of the form that had made him one of Europe’s most sought-after attackers and played a key role in helping Dortmund reach the UEFA Champions League final. The German side ultimately fell short against Real Madrid at Wembley, but Sancho’s performances during the campaign revived interest in his abilities.
Following the conclusion of that loan spell and after tensions with then-manager Erik ten Hag had eased, he was reintegrated into the Manchester United setup.
However, he never featured competitively for the club again. Instead, he secured another temporary move, joining Chelsea on loan for the 2024-25 season.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, he helped Chelsea win the UEFA Conference League and was on target in the Blues’ emphatic 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the final in Poland.
Although Chelsea held an obligation to make the move permanent, negotiations failed after Sancho refused to lower his wage demands. The London club subsequently paid a £5 million penalty fee to send him back to Manchester United.
Search for a Fresh Start
With only one year remaining on his United contract, Sancho embarked on yet another loan move, this time joining Aston Villa. The winger contributed to Villa’s successful campaign, helping the club secure Champions League qualification while also playing a role in their UEFA Europa League triumph.
Yet despite flashes of the quality that made him a star in Germany, Sancho was unable to consistently reproduce those performances in England. Three successive loan spells ultimately highlighted the difficulties he faced in reigniting his United career.
The former Borussia Dortmund star leaves Old Trafford having scored just 12 goals and provided six assists in 83 appearances across all competitions.
For a player who arrived with such promise and a substantial transfer fee attached to his name, his departure marks one of the club’s most disappointing modern transfers.
Now a free agent, Sancho begins the search for the next chapter of his career, hoping to rediscover the form that once made him one of the most exciting young attackers in world football.
Casemiro and Malacia Also Depart
Casemiro will also leave Manchester United after four years at the club. The Brazilian midfielder arrived from Real Madrid in 2022 in a deal worth around €70 million and quickly established himself as a key figure in the side.
He helped United win the EFL Cup during his first season and followed that success by lifting the FA Cup a year later. His experience and leadership proved valuable during parts of his stay, although injuries and inconsistent form limited his influence in recent campaigns.
Meanwhile, Tyrell Malacia’s time at Old Trafford also comes to an end. The Dutch defender joined from Feyenoord in July 2022 but struggled with injuries throughout much of his four-year spell. Those fitness setbacks restricted his appearances and prevented him from securing a regular place in the team.
Malacia spent one season on loan back in the Eredivisie, but United have opted to move in a different direction as they plan for the future. His departure, alongside those of Sancho and Casemiro, signals another significant period of change at Old Trafford as the club prepares for a new era.
