Morocco and Brazil clash in an international friendly game in 2023

The 2026 FIFA World Cup enters its third day with one of the most anticipated fixtures of the opening round set to take centre stage as African champions Morocco face South American giants Brazil in a blockbuster Group C encounter.

The two football powerhouses will clash at the MetLife Stadium in Miami at 10:00GMT, with thousands expected to witness what promises to be one of the standout matches of the first round.

Interest in the game has reached unprecedented levels, with FIFA confirming that the fixture has generated the highest ticket demand of the tournament so far. More than 80,000 tickets have been sold, while hospitality demand has also broken records, with over 10,000 luxury suite seats filled for the occasion.

Both nations arrive with high expectations. Brazil remain the most successful team in World Cup history with five titles, but the Seleção have struggled to replicate their dominance on the global stage since lifting the trophy in 2002 in Japan-Korea.

Contrasting Histories, Shared Ambitions

Brazil’s only World Cup semi-final appearance since their triumph in Japan and South Korea came in 2014 when they hosted the tournament. However, that campaign ended in heartbreak as Germany inflicted a historic 7-1 defeat in the last four on the hosts in Belo Horizonte.

Morocco, meanwhile, continue to build on the momentum generated in Qatar four years ago. The Atlas Lions became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final after eliminating European heavyweights Spain and Portugal before eventually finishing fourth.

The North Africans head into the tournament as African champions and possess the longest unbeaten run among all 48 participating nations. Morocco have gone 28 matches without defeat and have won three of their last five outings, underlining their consistency on the international stage.

Brazil, however, carry their own formidable credentials. They remain the highest-scoring nation in World Cup history with 237 goals and are the only country to have qualified for every edition of the competition.

Head To Head Record

Although Brazil and Morocco have met only twice, their previous encounters provide intriguing context ahead of tonight’s showdown.

Their sole World Cup meeting came at France 1998 when goals from Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Bebeto secured a convincing 3-0 victory for the South Americans during the group stage.

More recently, Morocco claimed a historic 2-1 win in an international friendly in 2023, becoming only the second African nation to defeat Brazil after Cameroon. At the World Cup itself, Cameroon remain the only African side to have beaten the five-time champions.

Brazil forward Vinícius Júnior acknowledged Morocco’s remarkable rise in world football during his pre-match media engagement.

“Morocco has become a benchmark for many countries across Africa and beyond. Congratulations to them for everything they’ve achieved. They have incredibly talented guys with outstanding technical quality. It is going to be a fantastic match, and I hope football fans around the world enjoy a great spectacle.”

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi responded with equal confidence, declaring that they leave everything on the pitch for the Moroccan people.

“We will die on the pitch for the Moroccan people. We are an African nation, so we will be well accustomed to the high temperatures in the USA. In Africa, we are proudly called the ‘Brazil of Africa.”

Players to Watch

Brazil will be without Neymar Jr, who has been ruled out through injury. However, head coach Carlo Ancelotti remains optimistic that the veteran forward could possibly return in time for the team’s second group match against Haiti.

In Neymar’s absence, much of the attacking responsibility will fall on Vinícius Júnior. The Real Madrid star is expected to operate from the left flank, using his pace and creativity to trouble the Moroccan defence.

Raphinha is likely to provide support from the opposite wing, while Bruno Guimarães and Casemiro are expected to anchor and provide the steel from midfield.

Alisson Becker is projected to start in goal behind a defensive pairing of Marquinhos and Gabriel Magalhães.

For Morocco, experienced goalkeeper Yassine Bounou will once again be a key figure, while captain Hakimi enters the tournament on a high after helping Paris Saint-Germain win the UEFA Champions League. Attacking threats such as Brahim Díaz and Ismael Saibari will also be expected to test Brazil’s defence.

With both nations carrying genuine ambitions of making a deep run in the tournament, tonight’s encounter could provide an early indication of who will emerge as the dominant force in Group C. The stage is set for a captivating contest between two teams determined to begin their World Cup journey with a statement victory.
