Undav Brace Sinks Ivory Coast at the Death

Germany striker Deniz Undav scored a brace against Ivory Coast in their second Group E fixture

Germany secured their place in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after coming from behind to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 in a dramatic Group E encounter at Toronto’s BMO Stadium.

Substitute Deniz Undav emerged as the hero for Die Mannschaft, scoring twice in the second half to overturn a deficit and break Ivorian hearts deep into stoppage time.

The Elephants looked on course for a famous victory after taking the lead midway through the first half through experienced midfielder Franck Kessie. The former AC Milan star reacted quickest inside the penalty area to stab home from close range following a chaotic goalmouth scramble in the 30th minute.

Ivory Coast carried that advantage into the interval and appeared comfortable for long periods, frustrating a German side that struggled to create clear-cut opportunities before the break.

Nagelsmann’s Changes Turn the Tide

Recognising the need for greater attacking urgency, Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann reshuffled his side fifteen minutes after halftime, introducing Deniz Undav, Nadiem Amiri and Jamie Leweling.

The substitutions immediately transformed Germany’s attacking play. Their movement and energy injected life into a team that had looked short of ideas during the opening 45 minutes.

The equaliser arrived in the 68th through two of the newly introduced players. Amiri delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area and Undav, who was unmarked, calmly guide the ball into the net, bringing Germany level and shifting momentum firmly in their favour.

With qualification hanging in the air, both teams pushed forward in search of a decisive goal. Germany enjoyed more possession and looked increasingly dangerous as the match entered its closing stages, while Ivory Coast sought to exploit spaces on the counterattack.

Undav continued to threaten the Ivorian defence with intelligent movement and sharp finishing instincts, forcing the Elephants to defend deeper than they would have liked. Despite Germany’s pressure, Ivory Coast remained dangerous and appeared capable of snatching a winner of their own.

Late Drama Sends Germany Through

The match produced its most dramatic moments in the closing minutes.

With just three minutes remaining in normal time, Ivory Coast carved out what seemed a golden opportunity to reclaim the lead. Nicolas Pepe surged forward on a swift counterattack before picking out Simon Adingra inside the box.

However, a moment of hesitation proved costly. Instead of shooting immediately, Adingra decided to take an extra touch and the chance disappeared before he could test German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

That missed opportunity would soon prove decisive. Four minutes into the six minutes of added time, Germany launched one final attack. Felix Nmecha threaded a perfectly weighted pass through the heart of the Ivorian defence, releasing Undav into space.

The Stuttgart forward kept his composure and fired beyond goalkeeper Yahia Fofana to complete a remarkable comeback and spark wild celebrations among the German players and supporters.

Germany Make The Knockout Round For The First Time Since 2014

The victory confirms Germany’s progression to the Round of 32 and marks the first time they have advanced beyond the group stage of a World Cup since lifting the trophy in Brazil in 2014.

Undav’s match-winning performance also underlined his growing importance to Nagelsmann’s side. The forward has now scored three goals in just two appearances at the tournament and is quickly establishing himself as one of Germany’s standout performers.

For Ivory Coast, the defeat was a bitter blow after an impressive display for much of the evening. Nevertheless, their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time remain alive.

The Elephants will face Curaçao in their final group match, knowing that even a draw could be enough to secure qualification as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams.
