The Black Stars of Ghana have expressed their heartfelt support for victims of the devastating floods that struck parts of Accra following Monday’s excessive rainfall, with head coach Carlos Queiroz delivering a message of solidarity on behalf of the entire team.
The torrential rains swept across several communities in the capital, leaving a trail of destruction, claiming lives and causing extensive damage to homes, businesses and other properties. Rescue efforts have continued in the affected areas as families count the cost of the disaster.
Despite being thousands of miles away in the United States preparing for Ghana’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 encounter against Colombia, the Black Stars said their thoughts remain firmly with those impacted by the tragedy back home.
The message comes at a significant moment for Ghanaian football, with the Black Stars reaching the World Cup knockout stage for only the third time in history and the first since their memorable run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
Queiroz Delivers Heartfelt Message
In a statement released through the Ghana Football Association, Queiroz said the players and technical staff were deeply saddened by the news emerging from Accra. “On behalf of myself, my technical team, and the entire Black Stars squad here in the United States, I want to express our deepest solidarity with the victims of the floods in Accra,” Queiroz said.
Addressing families who have suffered losses, the Portuguese coach acknowledged the pain being experienced across the country.

“To the families who have lost loved ones, those who have been displaced from their homes, and everyone affected, we are with you. The images and reports from home are heartbreaking, and even though we are here preparing for our World Cup match against Colombia, our thoughts have not left Ghana.”

Queiroz also reflected on the importance of unity during difficult times. “In moments like this, we are reminded that football is secondary. Ghana is one family. When Accra suffers, we all suffer.“
Team Motivated to Bring Hope
The Black Stars coach revealed that the players intend to carry the spirit of the Ghanaian people with them when they take to the field against Colombia in Kansas City. “We will carry the people of Accra in our hearts when we walk out at Kansas City Stadium on July 3. Your resilience is our inspiration. We will give everything to make you proud and to bring some hope in this difficult time.”
He concluded the message with words of encouragement for the nation. “Stay strong, Accra. Stay strong, Ghana. We stand with you.”

Historic Opportunity Against Colombia
While mourning with those affected by the flooding, the Black Stars remain focused on their World Cup campaign as they prepare for a crucial knockout encounter with Colombia.

Ghana booked their place in the Round of 32 after progressing from the Group L, marking the nation’s third qualification for the World Cup knockout rounds after previous appearances in 2006 and 2010. It is also the first time the Black Stars have advanced beyond the group stage since their historic quarter-final run in South Africa 16 years ago.
The clash against Colombia represents another opportunity for Ghana to create history on football’s biggest stage. A victory would move the Black Stars a step closer to matching, or even surpassing, their best-ever World Cup performance.
As excitement builds ahead of the encounter in Kansas City, the players have made it clear that their performance will be dedicated to the people of Ghana, particularly those recovering from the devastating floods.
For now, the team’s message extends beyond football. It is one of compassion, unity and national togetherness, reminding Ghanaians that even while chasing success on the world stage, the Black Stars remain closely connected to the people they proudly represent.
