Elliot Anderson signs for City until 2031

Manchester City have completed the signing of England international Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, securing one of the most sought-after midfielders in English football on a five-year contract until 2031. The 23-year-old arrives at the Etihad Stadium in a deal worth £116 million, making him City’s most expensive signing and the second most expensive British player in history with only £1m below what Chelsea paid Aston Villa for Morgan Rogers.

Anderson joins after an outstanding two-year spell at the City Ground, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders. Having previously developed through Newcastle United’s academy, the energetic box-to-box player flourished at the Forest combining relentless defensive work with composure and creativity in possession.

Manchester City moved quickly to secure Anderson after identifying him as a priority addition to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new campaign. The transfer follows weeks of negotiations, with Forest rejecting earlier offers before both clubs agreed on the £116m fee.

Speaking after signing his contract, Anderson admitted that joining the Premier League champions was an opportunity he could not refuse. “City are one of the biggest clubs in the world,” he said, adding that he was “absolutely determined” to make the move happen once he learned of the club’s interest.

The midfielder also outlined his ambitions, saying he wants “to test” himself “at the highest level” and described it as “a privilege” to become part of a club that has enjoyed remarkable success over the past decade.

Anderson concluded by promising supporters that he would do “everything” he could “to establish” himself in the team and repay the faith shown in him, insisting he is excited by the chance to compete for major trophies.

A Midfielder Built for City’s Style

Manchester City believe Anderson possesses the qualities required to thrive in their possession-based system. His remarkable consistency and durability have made him one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders, having missed just one league match across the previous two seasons.

His numbers from the 2025/26 campaign underline his influence. Anderson covered 411 kilometres during the league season, with only one player recording a greater distance. He also registered 104 tackles, the fourth-highest total in the division, highlighting his defensive mindset.

In possession, the England international was equally impressive. He recorded a league-leading 3,300 touches and completed 2,080 passes, the highest total among Premier League midfielders. Those statistics demonstrate both his ability to dictate possession and his importance in progressing the ball through midfield.

Despite his defensive workload, Anderson remained productive in attack, directly contributing to eight league goals, including a memorable curling strike against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium during Nottingham Forest’s campaign.

City See Long-Term Potential

Director of Football Hugo Viana believes Anderson’s best years are still ahead of him and described the midfielder as one of football’s brightest emerging talents. “Elliot is one of the outstanding young midfield talents in world football right now,” Viana said before praising his energy, outstanding work rate and “exceptional range of passing.“

The City executive also pointed to Anderson’s rapid development, saying there is “plenty of opportunity for development” and expressing confidence that he can become “a complete midfielder” under the club’s coaching staff.

Anderson also arrives with growing international experience. Since making his England debut in September 2025, he has earned seventeen senior caps and established himself in Thomas Tuchel’s plans, while his club career has already produced 174 senior appearances despite being only 23 years old.

He was parts of the Three Lions squad and played a key role as they finished third during the recently ended 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Manchester City will now hope their record investment delivers immediate success. With his exceptional work rate, technical quality and proven Premier League pedigree, Anderson appears well equipped to become a cornerstone of City’s midfield as the club targets further domestic and European honours.
