Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Cameroon international Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion, completing a long-standing pursuit of the highly rated young midfielder.

Baleba has signed a five-year contract with United, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2031, with the club holding an option to extend the agreement for a further year.

The club announced the move in an official statement, saying: “Manchester United is pleased to confirm that Carlos Baleba has joined the club, subject to registration.”

The 22-year-old becomes the latest Brighton midfielder to make a move to one of England’s traditional top-six clubs, following Yves Bissouma’s transfer to Tottenham Hotspur and Moisés Caicedo’s move to Chelsea in 2023.

United had been pursuing Baleba since last summer but were unable to reach an agreement with Brighton at the time. Their persistence has now paid off, with the Cameroon international becoming one of the club’s major midfield additions this summer in a move around £70 million.

Baleba made 31 Premier League appearances for Brighton last season, further establishing himself as one of the division’s promising young midfielders.

Baleba Brings Power and Ball-Winning Ability

The midfielder is known for his physical strength, aggressive pressing and ability to cover significant ground. His game is built around winning possession, breaking up opposition attacks and carrying the ball forward once possession has been regained.

He is also capable of operating under pressure and driving through midfield, giving United another player who can combine defensive work with progressive carries.

His physical profile is particularly suited to the demands of the Premier League, although consistency will be crucial as he makes the step up to a club with considerably greater expectations.

Baleba’s arrival is United’s third midfield reinforcement of the summer after Andrey Santos joined from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans arrived from Aston Villa.

The club had also agreed a deal with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson before the World Cup, but ultimately decided against completing that transfer.

Baleba: “The Club of My Dreams”

Baleba expressed his excitement at finally completing the move, describing Manchester United as the club of his dreams. “It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams,” Baleba said. “Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.”

The midfielder also welcomed the chance to work under head coach Michael Carrick, who has been tasked with shaping United’s new-look side. “I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick; his experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level,” he added.

Baleba said the ambition within the club convinced him that United are moving in the right direction. “The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together.”

United director of football Jason Wilcox also welcomed the signing, highlighting Baleba’s potential and the qualities he can bring to the squad. “Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further,” Wilcox said.

He added that Baleba “brings a unique combination of qualities” that will complement United’s midfield and strengthen the squad as the club prepares to compete across multiple competitions.

For Baleba, the move represents the biggest challenge of his young career. For United’s fan base, the expectation is huge and his energy, physicality and ball-winning ability must translate into a midfield capable of competing consistently at the highest level.
