Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has expressed sympathy to victims of the devastating floods that swept through parts of Accra following torrential rainfall, offering prayers and words of encouragement to affected families as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the disaster.
The floods, triggered by hours of heavy rain in the early hours of Monday, caused extensive destruction across several communities in the capital, claiming lives, displacing residents and damaging homes, businesses and public infrastructure.
Emergency responders and volunteers have continued rescue and relief operations in some of the worst-hit areas.
In a statement released on behalf of the Ghana Football Association and the country’s football community, Simeon-Okraku acknowledged the difficult circumstances facing many Ghanaians, describing the disaster as a painful moment despite the country’s recent football celebrations.
“At a time when our nation is united in celebration and buoyed by the inspiring achievement of the Black Stars in qualifying for the second round of the FIFA Men’s World Cup, it is deeply saddening that many of our fellow Ghanaians are enduring the pain of loss, displacement and uncertainty caused by this unfortunate disaster.”

Football Community Stands with Victims
The GFA President said the association stands in solidarity with everyone affected by the floods and praised the efforts of institutions and individuals working to provide assistance. “On behalf of the Ghana Football Association and the entire football fraternity, I wish to assure all those affected that our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult period,” he said.

He also commended the government’s emergency response teams, security services, volunteers and humanitarian organisations that have been working around the clock to support flood victims and restore normalcy to affected communities.
Simeon-Okraku urged Ghanaians to remain united as recovery efforts continue, expressing confidence that the country would overcome the tragedy through resilience and compassion.
Prayer for Recovery and Hope
The GFA President offered prayers for families who have suffered losses and those displaced by the flooding, while hoping for a swift return to normal life.
“We pray for strength for every family, comfort for those who have suffered losses, and the swift restoration of homes, livelihoods and communities. May our collective spirit of unity, resilience and compassion see us through this challenging moment.”

He concluded the message with a brief but hopeful declaration that “together, we will overcome.”
The statement comes as the Black Stars prepare for their Round of 32 clash against Colombia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Kansas City.

Ghana progressed from the group stage to reach the knockout rounds for the third time in the nation’s World Cup history, a feat that has lifted the spirits of many supporters back home even as the country mourns those affected by the floods.
Okraku’s Leadership Continues
Simeon-Okraku has led the Ghana Football Association since 2019 after succeeding Kwasi Nyantakyi, whose tenure ended following the fallout from the “Number 12″ investigative documentary by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which exposed corruption within Ghana football in 2018.
During his time in office, the GFA has overseen reforms in domestic football, youth development and women’s football while also strengthening Ghana’s presence within continental football administration.
Simeon-Okraku currently serves as the second vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), a position that has further elevated Ghana’s influence in African football governance.
His current mandate as GFA President is expected to expire in 2027. However, following the Executive Council’s decision to extend the presidential tenure from two terms in office to three terms, Simeon-Okraku will be eligible to seek a third term in office should he decide to contest the next elections.
As Ghana balances the excitement of the Black Stars’ progress on the world stage with the sorrow brought by the flooding disaster, the GFA President’s message reflects the football community’s support for victims and its hope that affected families will find strength as recovery efforts continue across the country.
