The Municipal Chief Executive of the Ga West Municipal Assembly, Honourable John Desmond Sowah Nai has acknowledged the frustrations of residents over the poor condition of roads in the municipality and assured that efforts are underway to address the situation. Speaking on the Amasaman roads and the recent demonstration by residents, he indicated that continuous reshaping works are being carried out while engagement with the Roads Ministry continues.
He explained that the agitation from residents stems from long standing promises made by previous administrations to fix the road network. From his view, the current state of the roads reflects both historical delays and the impact of seasonal rains on maintenance efforts.
Honourable Nai noted that the Assembly has repeatedly undertaken reshaping works to keep the roads motorable. According to him, about 30 tipper truck loads of gravel were recently applied to improve sections of the road network.
He further indicated that heavy rains have consistently washed away the gravel, making the intervention temporary. The Ga West MCE stressed that this challenge has made it difficult to maintain stable road conditions.
“What we have done is continuously reshape the road. About three weeks ago we added gravel to make it motorable. However, the rains keep washing everything away and we are still working on it.”

In addition, he revealed that discussions have been held with the Roads Ministry alongside the Member of Parliament for the area and engineers from Urban Roads. He said multiple engagements have been held in recent weeks to push for a more permanent solution.
Honourable Nai disclosed that the Roads Ministry has indicated that the affected roads are being repackaged for award. He expressed optimism that asphalt works will eventually be carried out once the process is completed.
The Ga West MCE added that residents are demanding a more durable asphalt surface instead of repeated reshaping. He noted that a delegation of demonstrators had engaged his office together with police leadership to discuss the way forward.
Growing Population And Infrastructure Gaps Intensify Transport Challenges In Ga West
The Municipal Chief Executive highlighted the scale of infrastructure challenges in the Ga West Municipality, noting that only a small fraction of its road network is motorable. He explained that the municipality has about 1,860 kilometres of roads with just around five percent in usable condition.
He further described Ga West as one of the largest municipalities in the country with several communities stretching towards Kasoa. Honourable Nai mentioned towns such as Ayikai Doblo, Manhean, Onyansana and Joman as areas affected by poor connectivity.

Additionally, he attributed rising pressure on local roads to population growth within the Greater Accra Region. He explained that increasing settlement in outer areas has intensified demand on roads connecting major routes such as the Mallam-Kasoa corridor.
From his perspective, the municipality serves as an alternative route when major highways become congested. This situation, he noted, places continuous strain on already weak infrastructure within Ga West.
Honourable Nai emphasised that these challenges require urgent attention from national authorities. He said coordination with the Ministry of Roads and Highways remains essential to securing long term solutions.
He also addressed concerns over planned demonstrations by residents, indicating that engagements had been held with organisers and security agencies. According to him, calm has been restored following discussions with the Divisional and District Police Commands.
“We have engaged the organisers and security agencies and the situation is calm. We are also intensifying efforts on the roads to improve access for residents.”

He added that temporary measures including gravelling works will continue over the weekend to improve accessibility. The Municipal Chief Executive indicated that efforts will continue while broader drainage and infrastructure challenges are also being addressed across the municipality.
