GAF launches 3-Weeks Exercise Starlight Stretch II

The Ghana Armed Forces has launched Exercise Starlight Stretch II, a three week military exercise aimed at strengthening operational readiness and improving coordination among security agencies as part of efforts to enhance national security.

The exercise officially commenced on Monday, July 6, 2026, with an opening ceremony at Nkwanta in the Oti Region under the Ghana Army’s 2026 and 2027 Training Year.

It will take place in both Nkwanta and Bawku, bringing together personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and other state agencies in a coordinated training programme designed to improve joint operational capabilities.

Military authorities say the exercise forms part of the Armed Forces’ continuous efforts to maintain a disciplined, mission ready force capable of responding effectively to Ghana’s evolving security environment.

By bringing together personnel from multiple agencies, the exercise seeks to improve interoperability, enhance communication, and ensure coordinated responses to emerging security challenges.

The programme reflects the Ghana Armed Forces’ commitment to continuous training as a critical component of maintaining national security and supporting peace across the country.

Military officials believe that effective collaboration among security agencies remains essential in responding to increasingly complex security threats and protecting communities.

Local Authorities Pledge Support

The opening ceremony was attended by the Municipal Chief Executive for Nkwanta South, Joseph Awal Antwi, who served as the Guest of Honour.

Commander Highlights Joint Operations

The Commanding Officer of the 3 Infantry Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Naah, said the exercise has been designed to improve interoperability and joint operational effectiveness among participating military units and collaborating agencies.

He explained that strengthening coordination across institutions would better prepare security personnel to respond to diverse operational situations.

According to Lt Col Naah, the Ghana Armed Forces remains committed to maintaining a disciplined and mission ready force capable of adapting to the country’s changing security landscape.

He stressed that continuous professional training remains central to achieving that objective.

Personnel Urged to Maintain Professional Standards

Lt Col Naah urged all personnel participating in Exercise Starlight Stretch II to adhere strictly to operational directives and safety procedures throughout the training period.

He emphasised that discipline, professionalism, and strict compliance with established regulations would be critical to the success of the exercise.

The Commanding Officer further encouraged participants to remain adaptable and prepared to operate effectively alongside other security agencies and relevant civil stakeholders.

He noted that modern security operations increasingly require coordinated responses involving multiple institutions working toward shared objectives.

According to him, building such cooperation through regular joint exercises enhances operational efficiency while strengthening overall national security preparedness.

Strengthening National Security Capacity

Exercise Starlight Stretch II forms part of the Ghana Army’s broader training agenda for the 2026 and 2027 Training Year, which focuses on improving readiness across operational units.

The exercise is expected to provide practical opportunities for personnel to strengthen command coordination, operational planning, and field cooperation under realistic conditions.

Military planners believe these regular exercises help improve preparedness while reinforcing the Armed Forces’ ability to respond rapidly to security challenges wherever they arise.

The inclusion of personnel from other agencies also reflects the growing emphasis on integrated security operations that combine military expertise with wider institutional collaboration.

Commitment to Peace and Stability

The commencement of Exercise Starlight Stretch II highlights the Ghana Armed Forces’ continued investment in professional training as a foundation for national peace and security.

With activities taking place over the next three weeks in both Nkwanta and Bawku, the exercise is expected to strengthen operational coordination, improve joint capabilities, and reinforce partnerships among participating institutions.

As security challenges continue to evolve, the Ghana Armed Forces says it remains committed to maintaining a highly trained, disciplined, and mission-ready force capable of protecting lives, preserving peace, and supporting national development through effective collaboration with sister security agencies and civil authorities.
