Acclaimed actress Cynthia Erivo is set to deliver what many expect to be a tour-de-force performance in Susanna White’s feature adaptation of the hit stage play “Prima Facie,” which will have its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.

The announcement, made Tuesday by TIFF organizers, positions the legal drama as one of the festival’s major draws alongside Siân Heder’s “Being Heumann” as the opening-night film. Running September 10-20, the 51st edition of North America’s premier film event will offer Toronto audiences the first look at Erivo in a role that has already generated significant awards buzz.

“Prima Facie,” adapted by playwright Suzie Miller from her own 2019 Olivier Award-winning script, follows Tessa Ensler, a brilliant, working-class British defense barrister who has built a formidable reputation in London’s cutthroat courtrooms. Specializing in defending men accused of sexual assault, Tessa embodies the system’s sharpest legal minds until a personal trauma forces her to confront the very institutions she has mastered.

The story explores themes of justice, consent, power, and systemic failure in the legal handling of sexual assault cases. Miller’s original play, a one-woman tour de force, starred Jodie Comer in both its West End and Broadway runs, earning critical acclaim and strong box office. Erivo, who also serves as an executive producer through her Edith’s Daughter banner, brings her signature intensity and emotional depth to the screen version.

Director Susanna White, known for films like “Woman Walks Ahead” and television work including “Andor,” helms the project. The cast includes Daniel Ings, Simon Russell Beale, Elizabeth Dulau, and Noma Dumezweni in supporting roles. An Australia-UK co-production between Bunya Productions and Embankment Films, the film is produced with backing that suggests strong international distribution potential.

Erivo, a multi-hyphenate talent with Emmy, Grammy, and Tony wins plus three Oscar nominations (including for “Harriet” and her groundbreaking work in “Wicked”), is no stranger to transformative roles. Her portrayal of Tessa is anticipated to highlight the character’s journey from confident legal warrior to a woman grappling with personal violation and institutional betrayal.

First-look images released earlier show Erivo in traditional barrister’s robes and a powdered wig, exuding both authority and vulnerability.

The transition from stage to screen expands the narrative beyond the original monologue format, allowing for courtroom sequences, supporting characters, and a broader cinematic exploration of Tessa’s world. White’s direction is expected to balance intimate character study with the high-stakes drama of legal proceedings.

TIFF Artistic Director and CEO Cameron Bailey praised the lineup, noting the film’s timely relevance. “Prima Facie” arrives at a moment when conversations about accountability in the entertainment industry and legal systems continue to resonate globally. Its premiere in Toronto positions it squarely in the awards conversation, with Erivo widely seen as a strong contender for best actress honors.

For Erivo, the project represents another step in a career defined by boundary-pushing performances. Following her success in “Wicked” and its sequel, she continues to select roles that challenge audiences and showcase her range. Her involvement as producer also underscores a growing trend of actors taking creative control over stories that matter to them.

Festival audiences can expect a searing examination of the justice system through a deeply personal lens. The play’s original run highlighted how “prima facie” evidence seemingly obvious on its face often fails victims in practice. Miller’s script has been lauded for its intelligence, wit, and emotional power, qualities that should translate powerfully to film.

Public Reactions

The announcement has already sparked excitement online, with fans expressing anticipation for Erivo’s interpretation while some note the high bar set by Comer’s stage performance. Industry observers see the TIFF premiere as a strategic launchpad for awards season, similar to past festival breakouts.

“Prima Facie” joins a strong slate of world premieres at TIFF 2026, including Hur Jin-ho’s “The Assassin(s)” starring Lee Min-ho. As more titles are announced in the coming weeks, the festival continues to cement its reputation as a launching ground for prestige cinema.

With its blend of star power, timely themes, and proven source material, Susanna White’s “Prima Facie” is poised to be one of the standout films of the fall. Cynthia Erivo’s commanding presence ensures it will be a must-see event when it debuts in Toronto this September.
