Maxence Lacroix unveiled after signing a 6-year contract at Chelsea

Maxence Lacroix has described his move to Chelsea as a “proud” moment in his career, insisting he is excited to become part of what he believes is a promising project under manager Xabi Alonso.

The French defender has completed his transfer from Crystal Palace to Stamford Bridge, signing a long-term contract that will keep him at Chelsea until 2032. His arrival marks another significant addition to Alonso’s squad as the club continues preparations for the 2026/27 season.

Lacroix said his decision to join Chelsea was made easier after conversations with Alonso and several players already at the club, including Malo Gusto, Trevoh Chalobah and Benoît Badiashile.

The 26-year-old revealed that discussions with Alonso focused heavily on football philosophy, tactics and the direction the manager wants to take the team, leaving him convinced that Chelsea was the ideal next step. “I think it’s the best move for me because it’s the best club in the world,” Lacroix said. “I spoke with the manager about tactics and how he sees the game. I saw that we have the same direction and desire for this club.”

The move represents more than just a transfer to one of Europe’s biggest clubs. It is an opportunity to become part of a new era at Chelsea, with the defender believing the squad has the quality and ambition to compete for major honours. “I’m really proud, really happy, to be part of this beautiful project and I just want to start playing,” he added. “I feel like we have a story to write here, and I can be part of it.”

From Palace Success to Stamford Bridge Challenge

Lacroix arrives in west London with valuable Premier League experience after two seasons at Crystal Palace, where he became a key figure in a historic period for the club.

The centre-back made 98 appearances for the Eagles and played a crucial role as Palace ended their long wait for major silverware by winning the FA Cup, UEFA Conference League and Community Shield.

His performances at Selhurst Park strengthened his reputation as one of the Premier League’s most athletic defenders. Known for his pace, physical presence and aerial ability, Lacroix has developed into a defender capable of handling the intensity and demands of English football.

His journey to the Premier League, however, began away from the spotlight. A graduate of Sochaux’s academy, Lacroix made his senior breakthrough in France’s second tier before earning a move to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in 2020.

The defender quickly adapted to top-flight football in Germany, making 130 appearances across four seasons and helping Wolfsburg secure Champions League qualification during an impressive first campaign.

That consistency eventually earned him a move to England in 2024, where his performances with Palace attracted international attention. He made his France debut in March before featuring for Les Bleus at the FIFA World Cup, where he helped his country reach the semi-finals.

A Defender Built for Chelsea’s Ambitions

Chelsea’s decision to invest in Lacroix reflects the club’s gradual move away from very young players and rather recruiting players entering their prime years while building a squad capable of sustained success. The signing of Morgan Rogers who turned 24 after joining the club this summer is a clear example.

The Frenchman brings a combination of experience and physical qualities that could prove important for Alonso, particularly as Chelsea look to establish defensive stability. His speed allows him to cover space effectively, while his ability in aerial duels adds another dimension to the back line.

Lacroix also already understands the demands of English football, which could reduce the adjustment period often experienced by foreign arrivals. Having played against several of his new team-mates in the Premier League and at international level, he joins Chelsea with a strong awareness of the environment he is entering.

His recent World Cup experience also adds another layer to his profile. Facing Chelsea players such as Morgan Rogers, Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah on the international stage has given him a glimpse of the quality within his new squad.

For Chelsea, the challenge now will be turning individual talent into collective success. The club has assembled a group of highly rated players, but Lacroix believes the ambition inside the dressing room can translate into trophies. “When you see the quality of the players here, everything we have around the club, it’s something that we can achieve,” he said. “The ambition is to lift trophies, and I can’t wait to contribute.”

Lacroix’s arrival provides Chelsea with a defender entering a key stage of his career, combining experience, physical attributes and a winning mentality developed during Palace’s breakthrough period.

Now, after helping Crystal Palace create history, he hopes to play a role in writing a new chapter at Stamford Bridge.
