GHS Renews Call for Stronger National Support on Breastfeeding

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has joined the global community in marking World Breastfeeding Week 2026 and Ghana’s Breastfeeding Month, issuing a renewed call for stronger, more consistent support to help every mother breastfeed successfully.

This year’s commemoration draws attention to the need for better tracking of progress, learning from what has worked, and improving the systems that protect, promote, and support breastfeeding across the country, with GHS insisting the responsibility cannot rest on mothers alone.

The Service used the occasion to reflect on the far-reaching benefits of breastmilk, describing it as far more than a matter of maternal instinct, but a public health intervention with implications that stretch well beyond the mother and child.

According to GHS, breastmilk offers protection against life-threatening illnesses such as diarrhoea and pneumonia, while also guarding against common allergies in later life. The Service noted that the benefits extend into cognitive development, as well as the healthy development of facial and dental muscles in infants.

“Breastmilk is, indeed, a super food. Mothers, however, need immense support to practice this life saving intervention.”

Beyond childhood, GHS explained that breastfeeding also has long-term metabolic advantages, noting that it helps programme the body against excess fat storage, thereby lowering the risk of overweight and obesity later in life.

The Service tied these health outcomes to national development, arguing that healthier children today translate into a more productive workforce that can support Ghana’s economic growth in the future.

Reviewing What Has Worked, Closing the Gaps

GHS said this year’s commemoration presents an opportunity for the Service to take stock of past breastfeeding support strategies, identify what has been effective, and address any existing gaps in the system. The Service indicated that its primary approach over the years has centred on education delivered at every point of healthcare contact with mothers.

The Service explained that this strategy involves providing timely information, hands-on practical assistance, and consistent follow-up support to mothers and their families, an approach it intends to build on rather than abandon.

It stressed that this commitment aligns directly with Ghana’s broader health priorities, including improving maternal, newborn, and child health outcomes, reducing malnutrition and preventable childhood illnesses, strengthening the primary healthcare system, and advancing the country’s push toward Universal Health Coverage.

GHS further linked breastfeeding support to equity in child health outcomes, describing the practice as one of the few interventions capable of giving every child, regardless of where they are born or their family’s economic circumstances, an equal start in life.

 “Breastfeeding is the great equalizer.”

Shared Responsibility Beyond the Health System

While acknowledging its own role in strengthening breastfeeding support, GHS was emphatic that the health system cannot carry this responsibility alone. The Service called on employers to create workplace environments that genuinely allow staff to breastfeed successfully, rather than treating it as an afterthought to formal employment policy.

GHS also took aim at the media’s role in shaping public attitudes toward breastfeeding, urging outlets to actively promote the benefits of breastmilk and to resist being used as platforms for advertising breastmilk substitutes.

The Service extended its appeal to employee associations, calling on them to prioritise breastfeeding support in workplace negotiations, and to the wider public, whom it urged to embrace breastfeeding as a normal and valued practice within Ghanaian society.

Communities and families, GHS added, have a role to play too, particularly in using their influence to encourage breastfeeding mothers to reach the recommended standard of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child’s life.

Calls to Fathers, Employers, and Parliament

GHS specifically appealed to fathers, families, and communities to take an active role in encouraging and assisting breastfeeding mothers, framing their involvement as essential rather than optional. The Service also renewed its call on employers to provide adequate maternity protection, flexible working arrangements, and designated breastfeeding breaks for nursing staff.

Parliamentarians were not left out of the appeal, with GHS urging lawmakers to champion legislation and allocate resources that would strengthen breastfeeding support nationwide, suggesting that policy backing is needed to complement the education-based approach the Service has relied on for years.

In its closing remarks, GHS called on the nation to use this August, and the months beyond it, to stand firmly behind every breastfeeding mother across the country.

“Let us protect what works, improve what needs attention, and ensure that no mother or child is left behind.”

The Service reiterated that breastfeeding cannot be treated as the sole responsibility of mothers, describing it instead as a shared national responsibility that requires the coordinated effort of the health system, employers, the media, Parliament, and communities alike.

As Ghana joins the rest of the world in observing World Breastfeeding Week 2026, GHS’s message points to a broader ambition: moving beyond individual encouragement toward building the structural and policy support systems that make exclusive breastfeeding genuinely achievable for mothers across the country, whether in formal employment, informal work, or at home.
