Retail Investors Storm GSE as Monthly Trades Hit 300,000

Ghana Stock Exchange Crowned Africa’s Best Performer

The Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange, Abena Amoah

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) is witnessing a remarkable resurgence in investor activity, with monthly trades soaring from about 25,000 last year to an astonishing 300,000 this year.

The dramatic increase comes alongside a powerful rally in Ghanaian equities, with the GSE equities index recording a 73% year-to-date gain. The development signals a major shift in investor confidence and has positioned Ghana’s stock market among some of the strongest-performing equity markets globally.

The Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange, Abena Amoah, disclosed the latest figures during the launch of the updated GSE ESG Manual.

According to her, the equities market has delivered a 73% return so far this year, while the financial stocks index has recorded a similar 73% gain.

The surge has not been limited to share prices. Trading volumes and the total value of transactions have also doubled compared with the same period last year.

“The volumes traded and values traded have doubled compared to where we were the same period last year,” Ms. Amoah said.

The figures point to a market experiencing significantly higher levels of participation as investors return to equities in search of stronger returns.

Retail Investors Flood the Market

Perhaps the most striking development is the sharp rise in retail investor participation.

Ms. Amoah revealed that the average number of trades executed monthly has increased from approximately 25,000 last year to 300,000 trades this year.

That represents a twelve-fold increase in monthly trading activity and highlights a dramatic transformation in the composition and intensity of market participation.

“The market has shifted,” she said.

The increase suggests that more individual investors are becoming active participants in Ghana’s capital market. Rather than remaining heavily concentrated among institutional players, the market is attracting a broader pool of investors seeking opportunities in listed companies.

The dramatic increase in retail transactions could also deepen market liquidity and create greater opportunities for companies seeking to raise capital through the exchange.

73% Rally Puts GSE in Spotlight

The 73% year-to-date increase in the equities index has emerged as one of the biggest stories in Ghana’s financial markets this year.

For investors who entered the market earlier in the year, the performance has delivered substantial gains and potentially strengthened confidence in listed equities as an investment avenue.

The financial stocks index has also gained 73%, underscoring the significant contribution of financial companies to the market’s performance.

The rally comes at a time when investors are closely monitoring Ghana’s improving macroeconomic conditions, corporate earnings and the outlook for interest rates.

A stronger stock market can provide companies with an alternative source of financing while giving investors an avenue to participate directly in corporate growth.

IPO Drought Finally Broken

The renewed activity on the GSE also follows the return of new listings after years of limited initial public offering activity.

Ms. Amoah noted that the market had experienced a seven-year IPO drought before First Atlantic Bank PLC listed on the exchange in December 2025.

The development marked an important turning point for Ghana’s capital market.

The momentum continued with Zen Petroleum and Casa Preco PLC also raising equity capital.

Another company was reportedly in the process of raising debt capital in August, with the potential for a listing before the end of the month.

The return of new issuers could become an important catalyst for the continued expansion of Ghana’s capital market.

Stronger Standards Attract Investors

The GSE’s management has attributed part of the renewed market activity to improvements in standards and greater alignment with international market practices.

Sustainability reporting requirements are increasingly becoming important for investors around the world, particularly institutional investors who consider environmental, social and governance factors when making investment decisions.

The updated GSE ESG Manual is therefore expected to strengthen the framework for sustainability reporting among listed companies.

Improved standards can also enhance transparency and investor confidence, potentially making Ghanaian companies more attractive to both domestic and international investors.

More Investment Products Expected

The GSE is not resting on the current rally.

Ms. Amoah said the exchange would continue working with regulators, listed companies and other stakeholders to introduce more instruments to the market.

The objective is to deepen access to capital for Ghana’s private sector and government while giving investors more opportunities to deploy funds.

The strategy could be crucial as Ghana seeks to develop a deeper and more diversified domestic capital market.

With trading activity already surging and new listings returning, the GSE appears to be entering a new phase.

A New Era for Ghana’s Capital Market

The combination of a 73% equities gain, doubled trading volumes and values, and a twelve-fold increase in monthly trades paints a powerful picture of renewed activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

The biggest question now is whether the momentum can be sustained.

If investor participation continues to grow, more companies could be encouraged to list, while stronger liquidity could make the exchange increasingly attractive to businesses seeking long-term financing.

For Ghana’s capital market, the transformation could prove significant. What was once characterised by subdued trading and limited new listings is now showing clear signs of revival.

With retail investors storming the market and the GSE delivering one of its strongest performances in years, Ghana’s stock market is firmly back in the spotlight.
