Former Member of Parliament for Subin Constituency, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has entered the contest for the New Patriotic Party’s General Secretary position with a pledge to strengthen discipline, accountability and honesty within the party.

The NPP General Secretary hopeful believes the party requires leadership that can rebuild confidence among its executives and create the organisational strength needed to return the party to power in 2028.

Honourable Antwi disclosed that his decision followed extensive consultations with senior members of the party and engagements with executives and grassroots supporters across the country. Among those he consulted was former Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye.

Those engagements, he explained, produced a consistent message from party members about the qualities they expect from the next General Secretary. He indicated that the feedback has reinforced his belief that his approach to party administration resonates with delegates.

“And they see in me as a man who will come and instill discipline in our party, as a man who will come and ensure accountability in our party, as the man who will be honest with party executives and the leadership of the party.”

The former Member of Parliament has consequently framed his candidacy around restoring confidence in the party’s internal administration. He believes honesty in dealing with executives and leadership is essential to creating a more cohesive organisation.

His campaign comes at a critical stage in the NPP’s preparations for its next internal elections and the broader task of rebuilding after its recent electoral defeat. The General Secretary will play an important role in coordinating the party’s administrative structures as it prepares for the 2028 general election.

Honourable Antwi has also linked his bid to the NPP’s ambition of returning to government. He noted that the consultations he undertook were accompanied by a clear expectation that the party’s next national executives should help steer the organisation towards victory in the next national election.

A major political objective outlined during his engagements is to support the presidential ambitions of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. He said the party’s national elections should produce a leadership capable of helping to secure Dr Bawumia’s election as President.

The former Member of Parliament, however, has been careful not to turn his campaign into a direct indictment of the outgoing national executives. When asked to assess their performance and identify what has gone wrong, he placed the responsibility for that judgement on the delegates.

“That is not for me to judge, it’s for delegates to judge,” Honourable Antwi stated. He added that he has already explained to delegates the reasons he believes change is necessary within the party.

His decision to reserve detailed criticism of the outgoing leadership also distinguishes his approach from a campaign built primarily around attacking individuals. Instead, he has focused his message on the qualities and organisational changes he believes should define the party’s next leadership.

The internal elections should therefore be viewed as an opportunity to determine the kind of administration the party needs at this stage of its political journey. His argument is that discipline and accountability must be accompanied by leadership that communicates honestly with members.

Former MP Takes ‘UNITE’ Message To NPP Grassroots Ahead Of Elections

A nationwide grassroots campaign built around the message “UNITE” has become a central feature of former Member of Parliament for Subin Constituency Eugene Boakye Antwi’s bid for the New Patriotic Party’s General Secretary position.

The NPP General Secretary hopeful has spent the past year taking the message to party members, with the strategy focusing on unity, grassroots development, institutional innovation, training and the empowerment of party supporters.

The five elements of his message are captured in the acronym “UNITE”. The former Member of Parliament explained that the strategy is to expand the NPP’s base.

“Unite the party, nurture the grassroots, innovate our systems, train our people, and empower them to expand the base of our party. That’s been my message. So it’s the UNITE, the same UNITE message that has taken me around the country.”

The strategy gives prominence to internal cohesion at a time when the NPP is preparing for its next national elections. Honourable Antwi believes a united organisation will be better placed to mobilise its members and build the structures required for future electoral contests.

Grassroots development forms another important component of the proposal. By placing the nurturing of party members alongside training and empowerment, his campaign is seeking to present organisational development as a continuous process rather than an activity limited to election periods.

Training, meanwhile, is positioned as a means of equipping party members to play more effective roles within the organisation. The campaign message suggests that a stronger grassroots structure depends not only on numbers but also on the capacity of members to contribute meaningfully to the party’s work.

Honourable Antwi’s nationwide engagements have also provided him with an opportunity to gauge the response to his campaign. He described the level of support as increasingly encouraging but declined to make a definitive claim about the eventual outcome.

The former Member of Parliament pointed specifically to the party’s internal election at Subin as the point at which the strength of his support would become clearer. His response was deliberately measured, leaving delegates to determine the result when they vote.

“It’s just getting warmer. You just have to wait till the 3rd of October and you see the real polls in Subin on the 3rd of October.”

Eugene Boakye Antwi

The strength of the NPP will ultimately depend on how effectively its national leadership connects with members beyond the centre of the party. His campaign is therefore asking delegates to consider who should occupy the General Secretary’s office and also what organisational direction the party should take.
