GSE Loses GH¢2.9bn as Market Slides Again

GSE Loses GH¢2.9bn as Market Slides Again

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) suffered another bruising trading session as the market wiped out approximately GH¢2.9 billion in value, raising fresh concerns about the recent weakness in equities despite the exchange maintaining a strong year-to-date performance.

At the close of trading, the total market capitalisation of the GSE had fallen from about GH¢285.9 billion to GH¢283 billion, equivalent to approximately US$25.1 billion.

The sharp decline came as selling pressure dominated the market, with nine listed equities recording losses compared with only three gainers among the 29 equities that participated in trading.

GH¢2.9bn Erased From Market Value

The latest session delivered a significant blow to investors, with the exchange losing about GH¢2.9 billion in market value.

The decline highlights the growing volatility facing the market after an impressive rally earlier in the year. Although the GSE remains substantially higher on a year-to-date basis, the latest figures show that investors are increasingly facing short-term losses across several counters.

The benchmark GSE Composite Index dropped 125.64 points, representing a 0.83% decline, to close at 14,950.61 points.

The latest fall also pushed the index further below the psychologically important 15,000-point level, signalling continued pressure on Ghanaian equities.

Despite the latest setback, the GSE Composite Index remains up an impressive 70.47% since the beginning of the year.

However, the shorter-term numbers paint a less encouraging picture. The index has lost 0.47% over the past week and 2.84% over the past four weeks.

Nine Stocks Fall as Investors Sell

The trading session was dominated by losses, with nine equities declining compared with only three gainers.

Dannex Ayrton Starwin emerged as the biggest casualty, recording a dramatic 9.89% drop in its share price to close at GH¢1.64.

The steep decline placed the company firmly at the bottom of the day’s performance table and added significant pressure to an already cautious market.

TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana was another major loser, falling 8.92% during the session.

Intravenous Infusions also suffered a decline of 3.95%, while Ecobank Transnational dropped 3.76%.

The broad losses suggest that selling pressure was not limited to a single sector, with investors taking positions across different counters.

For market watchers, the performance could signal a period of profit-taking after the extraordinary gains recorded by the GSE earlier in the year.

Digicut Leads the Few Winners

While the majority of actively traded equities ended lower, a handful of stocks managed to buck the downward trend.

Digicut Production & Advertising emerged as the day’s biggest gainer, recording a 7.14% increase to close at GH¢0.30 per share.

CalBank followed with a 4.29% gain, while Trust Bank Gambia posted a more modest appreciation of 1.67%.

The limited number of gainers, however, underscores the negative sentiment that characterised the session.

With only three stocks recording price increases against nine decliners, the market breadth clearly favoured the bears.

MTN Ghana Dominates Trading

Despite the decline in market value, activity on the exchange increased sharply.

A total of 4,487,796 shares changed hands during the session, representing a market value of GH¢25.86 million.

Compared with the previous trading session on Monday, August 31, trading volume increased by an impressive 143%, while turnover surged by 403%.

MTN Ghana dominated activity, recording the highest volume with approximately 3.14 million shares traded.

Kasapreko followed with 613,131 shares, while CalBank recorded 188,069 shares. Enterprise Group completed the top four with 132,146 shares traded.

The significant jump in turnover suggests that substantial investor activity took place even as the market moved lower.

Financial Stocks Also Take a Hit

The weakness extended to financial stocks, with the GSE Financial Stocks Index declining by 0.56% to close at 7,860.08 points.

The index has now recorded a 0.34% loss over the past week and a more substantial 4.09% decline over the past four weeks.

However, similar to the broader market, the financial stocks segment remains strongly positive for the year.

The GSE-FSI has gained 69.14% year to date, demonstrating that the recent decline has so far done little to erase the massive gains accumulated earlier in 2026.

Is the GSE Rally Losing Momentum?

The latest performance raises questions about whether the spectacular GSE rally is beginning to lose momentum.

A year-to-date gain of more than 70% remains exceptional, but the consecutive short-term losses suggest that investors may be reassessing valuations and locking in profits.

The combination of declining indices, widespread share price losses and a GH¢2.9 billion reduction in market capitalisation will likely keep investors closely watching the next trading sessions.

Currently, the GSE remains one of Africa’s strongest-performing equity markets in 2026. Yet the latest sell-off means that even a booming stock market can experience sharp corrections.

With trading activity accelerating and billions of cedis changing hands, investors will be watching closely to determine whether the latest decline is simply a temporary correction or the beginning of a deeper market pullback.
