Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has described the Ghana Premier League as one of the most important foundations of the country’s football as the 2026/27 season prepares to kick off.
The new Ghana Premier League campaign begins on Saturday, September 5, with Vision FC hosting Young Apostles FC in the first of the matchday one games. The remaining opening-round fixtures will be played on Sunday.
The Minister extended a goodwill message to the 18 clubs competing in the new campaign, as well as their players, coaches, management teams, match officials, supporters, sponsors and broadcasters.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation on the eve of the new season, Kofi Adams praised the various stakeholders for their role in keeping the domestic game alive and stressed the importance of a strong top-flight competition to the wider football ecosystem.

Adams also congratulated defending champions Medeama SC for their title-winning campaign last season while welcoming the three newly promoted clubs, Debibi United, Port City FC and FC AshantiGold 04, who will make their Premier League debuts this season.

Minister Challenges Clubs to Raise Standards
With the new season presenting another opportunity for growth, Adams urged clubs to improve standards both on and off the pitch and make the Premier League a product that attracts greater interest.
He called on clubs to give supporters “compelling reasons to return to our stadiums” by improving the matchday experience, telling players’ stories more effectively, strengthening their brands and making the competition more attractive to families, broadcasters, sponsors and investors.
The Minister also challenged players to make the most of the platform provided by the Premier League.
“This is your stage. Play with ambition. Play with discipline. Express your talent and give the supporters football worth remembering.”

He reminded players that every match provides an opportunity to advance their careers while inspiring the next generation of footballers across the country.
Match officials were also urged to uphold the credibility of the competition by ensuring that fairness, professionalism, consistency and integrity remain at the centre of their work.
Call for Passionate but Safe Support
Adams called on supporters to play their part in making the new season successful, stressing that the league needs their passion and support.
“The league needs you,” he said, urging fans to bring the colours, songs, healthy rivalry and passion that have traditionally characterised Ghanaian football while respecting fellow supporters and helping to keep stadiums safe.
The Minister further reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with the Ghana Football Association, the Security Services and other stakeholders to create an environment capable of supporting the growth of the domestic game.
He said such collaboration would be critical to attracting investment and creating greater opportunities for young people through football.
Adams ended his message by expressing hope for a season filled with quality football, strong support and the emergence of new stars.
“May the 2026/27 season give us beautiful football, packed stadiums, emerging stars, healthy rivalries and moments that remind us why we love our local game. The league is ours. Let us support it. Let us protect it. Let us grow it.”
