The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) has emerged as Africa’s best-performing stock exchange as of the end of August 2026, delivering a remarkable 71.27% return in local currency terms and placing Ghana firmly at the centre of Africa’s booming equity market story.
The impressive performance puts the Accra Bourse ahead of 13 other African stock markets assessed in the latest performance rankings, highlighting the extraordinary rally recorded by Ghanaian equities despite fluctuations in the local currency.
For investors who stayed in the Ghanaian market, the numbers represent a major windfall and underline the growing strength of the domestic equity market.
GSE Takes Africa’s Top Spot
The 71.27% return recorded by the GSE in local currency terms makes it the strongest-performing exchange among the 14 African markets considered as of August 31, 2026.
The performance is particularly significant given Ghana’s recent economic challenges and the volatility experienced by the cedi against major international currencies.
The surge means investors exposed to Ghanaian equities have enjoyed substantial capital gains over the year, with several listed companies recording exceptional price increases.
The development also reinforces the GSE’s growing importance as investors search for opportunities across African financial markets.
Nigeria Leads in Dollar Returns
Although Ghana claimed the top position in local currency performance, Nigeria took the lead when returns were measured in US dollar terms.
Nigeria recorded an extraordinary 153% dollar-denominated return as of August 31, 2026, compared with Ghana’s 59.09%.
In local currency terms, however, Nigeria’s stock market returned 53.38%, significantly below the GSE’s 71.27%.
The difference demonstrates how exchange rate movements can dramatically affect investment returns for international investors.
For Ghana, the cedi depreciated by approximately 7% against the US dollar during the period. Despite that depreciation, the GSE still generated a dollar return of 59.09%, reflecting the strength of the underlying equity rally.
The figures suggest that Ghanaian stocks have performed strongly enough to absorb a significant portion of the currency-related impact.
Low Inflation Boosts Ghanaian Equities
One of the major factors supporting the GSE’s performance has been Ghana’s improved inflation environment.
After years of elevated inflation, the country has experienced a substantial moderation in price pressures. The improvement has helped strengthen investor confidence while creating more favourable conditions for businesses and financial markets.
Lower inflation can improve corporate planning, reduce pressure on operating costs and strengthen expectations about monetary policy.
For the stock market, these developments can encourage investors to increase their exposure to equities as confidence in macroeconomic stability improves.
The GSE’s performance therefore reflects not only rising share prices but also growing optimism about Ghana’s broader economic outlook.
Market Rally Continues Into July
The powerful performance was already evident before the August rankings were released.
At the close of July 2026, the GSE Composite Index had delivered a return of 75.99%, while the Financial Stock Index recorded an even stronger return of 77.27%.
The figures showed that the market’s rally was broad enough to benefit both the overall equity market and the financial sector.
Market activity has also surged dramatically.
According to data from the Ghana Stock Exchange, 140,323 transactions were recorded during the period, representing a staggering 456.44% increase compared with the same period a year earlier.
The sharp increase in transactions signals heightened investor participation and stronger trading activity across listed securities.

Intravenous Infusions Leads Stock Market Winners
Several individual companies have played a major role in driving the GSE’s spectacular performance.
Intravenous Infusions PLC emerged as one of the biggest winners, recording an astonishing 367% price increase.
Hords PLC followed closely with a 255% gain, highlighting the extraordinary returns available in selected corners of the Ghanaian equity market.
Clydestone (Ghana) PLC recorded a 61% increase, while Cocoa Processing Co. PLC gained 31%.
Other notable gainers included Ecobank Ghana PLC, which rose 16%, and Scancom PLC, which gained 11%.
Standard Chartered Bank preference shares and Tullow Oil PLC each recorded gains of 10%.
GCB Bank PLC increased by 8%, while Dannex Ayrton Starwin PLC gained 7%.
Kasapreko PLC and Ghana Oil Company PLC each recorded 6% gains.
CalBank PLC and TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC also advanced, although by a more modest 1% each.
Investor Confidence Reaches New Heights
The remarkable gains recorded across several equities suggest that investor sentiment towards Ghanaian stocks has strengthened significantly.
The combination of improved macroeconomic conditions, lower inflation and strong corporate performance has created an environment in which equities have attracted greater attention.
The huge increase in transactions further demonstrates that investors are not simply holding shares passively. They are actively buying and selling securities as market opportunities emerge.
For Ghana, the GSE’s number-one ranking among African stock markets represents a powerful vote of confidence in the country’s capital market.
GSE’s Stunning Run Faces New Test
Despite the impressive gains, investors will be watching closely to determine whether the rally can continue through the remainder of 2026.
After such substantial increases, some equities could face profit-taking as investors seek to lock in gains. Currency movements, inflation developments, interest rates and corporate earnings will also remain important factors.
Nevertheless, the GSE’s performance through August has already secured a remarkable milestone.
With a 71.27% local currency return and a 59.09% dollar return, Ghana’s stock market has demonstrated extraordinary resilience and emerged as Africa’s best-performing exchange in local currency terms.
The latest figures could further strengthen Ghana’s position on the radar of domestic and international investors looking for high-growth opportunities in African equities.
