Republic Bank and the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) have forged a major partnership aimed at raising the professional capabilities of banking staff and strengthening the connection between Ghana’s financial industry and academia.
The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Republic Bank Head Office, creating a framework for deeper cooperation in professional training, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), knowledge exchange and other mutually beneficial areas.
The partnership comes at a time when the banking industry is facing rapid changes in technology, customer expectations, regulation and financial services delivery. For Republic Bank, the agreement is expected to give its employees greater access to specialised training that can sharpen their skills and improve workplace performance.
The collaboration also signals a growing recognition that academic institutions and financial-sector players can achieve greater impact when they combine professional expertise with academic knowledge.
Republic Bank Puts Staff Development at the Centre
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Managing Director of Republic Bank PLC, Dr Benjamin Dzoboku, stressed the importance of human capital to the long-term success of institutions.
“Human resource is a critical asset for every institution. We cannot do without human resource,” Dr Dzoboku said.
According to him, Republic Bank considers its employees one of its most important assets and believes continuous investment in their development is essential to building strong leadership and a lasting institutional legacy.
He explained that the expertise available at UPSA would support the bank in developing its employees and preparing them to respond effectively to changing demands within the banking sector.
The Managing Director indicated that the true value of the agreement would ultimately be determined by the skills employees acquire and the impact those skills have on the quality of products and services delivered to customers. “We’re looking forward for the unpacking and the impactful vocational training that will help my staff to develop new skills and competencies,” he said.
Dr Dzoboku further noted that the bank would expect reports on the implementation of the training programmes and their impact, highlighting the importance of measuring the practical outcomes of the collaboration.
UPSA Brings Academia Closer to Banking
Representing the Vice Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Samuel Antwi said the agreement was designed to bridge the gap between industry and academia.
He explained that the partnership would not only bring industry closer to the university but would also take academic expertise directly to the workplace.
A major component of the agreement is the provision of professional training and CPD programmes for Republic Bank employees.
Professor Antwi emphasised that continuous learning has become increasingly important for professionals who have spent several years in the workplace.
“Sometimes when you get out of school for some time and you are always on the job, there are new things that come up that you may miss out on.”

He noted that professional environments continue to evolve, meaning employees must consistently update their knowledge and acquire new competencies to remain effective.
Through the partnership, Republic Bank staff are expected to benefit from training that reflects emerging developments and practices relevant to their professional responsibilities.

Banking Talent Faces a New Skills Test
The agreement could have broader implications for Ghana’s banking industry as financial institutions increasingly compete on the strength of their people, technology and customer experience.
As banking services become more sophisticated, employees are expected to possess a wider range of technical, managerial and professional skills.
The partnership between Republic Bank and UPSA therefore provides an opportunity to combine the university’s professional training capabilities with the bank’s practical industry experience.
For Republic Bank, this could translate into a workforce better equipped to understand changing customer needs, respond to emerging industry trends and contribute to innovation.
The arrangement also reflects a broader shift towards partnerships that connect classroom knowledge with real-world business challenges.
More Than Just Staff Training
Professor Antwi indicated that the MOU extends beyond employee training and CPD programmes.
He said the agreement would cover other mutually beneficial areas, including business arrangements and additional forms of collaboration between the two institutions.
This could create opportunities for further knowledge exchange and cooperation as both institutions explore ways to leverage their respective strengths.
Professor Antwi expressed confidence that the partnership would produce tangible benefits for both institutions, particularly Republic Bank as it works to create value for its shareholders.
The relationship also carries a personal connection, as Dr Dzoboku is an alumnus of UPSA.
Professor Antwi described the partnership as “Republic Bank–UPSA in action” and pledged the university’s commitment to implementing the commitments contained in the agreement.
A Strategic Investment in the Future
The Republic Bank-UPSA partnership ultimately represents more than the signing of an MOU. It establishes a platform for sustained professional development, knowledge sharing and stronger industry-academia cooperation.
For Republic Bank, the immediate focus will be on equipping employees with new skills and competencies that can strengthen workplace performance. For UPSA, the partnership provides an opportunity to demonstrate how academic expertise can directly support industry development.
As both institutions move towards implementing the agreement, the effectiveness of the partnership will likely be judged by the practical results it produces.
If successfully executed, the collaboration could strengthen Republic Bank’s workforce while contributing to a stronger culture of continuous professional development within Ghana’s financial sector.
