Antoine Semenyo has been rewarded for his outstanding start to the 2026/27 Premier League season after earning a nomination for the EA SPORTS Player of the Month award for September.

Chelsea’s João Pedro won the award for the month of August after scoring twice and providing two assists.

The Ghana international is one of eight players shortlisted for the monthly prize following a productive spell with Manchester City.

He featured every minute of City’s three Premier League victories during September, contributing two goals and two assists as Enzo Maresca’s side maintained their perfect start to the campaign after five games.

Semenyo set up Erling Haaland for City’s 1-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City in the first game of the month. Operating from the right, the 26-year-old delivered a precise cross for Erling Haaland, who headed home the for the only strike.

He was again influential as City defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford with ten men.

His best performance of the month came against Sunderland, where he played a direct role in three of City’s five goals in a thrilling 5-3 victory. Semenyo first combined with Rayan Cherki for the Frenchman’s goal before twice finding the net himself.

The Sunderland display also earned Semenyo the Man of Match award in the game and a place among the nominees for the Premier League’s official Player of the Matchweek award.

Although Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey eventually won that fan vote, Semenyo’s inclusion underlined the impact of his performance.

His September numbers have strengthened what was already an impressive beginning to his Manchester City career.

He currently has three assists in the Premier League this season and, across all competitions since arriving from Bournemouth in January, has registered 13 goals and six assists in 34 appearances.

Semenyo Eyes Second Monthly Prize

Semenyo is not entering unfamiliar territory. He won the February 2026 EA SPORTS Player of the Month award after scoring three goals and supplying an assist during his first full month at City.

That success came only weeks after his January move from Bournemouth and established him among Ghana’s small group of winners of the prestigious award. He joined Tony Yeboah and Andre Ayew as the only Ghanaians to win the accolade.

A second triumph would be significant because it would confirm that his February success was not simply the product of a strong introduction to a new club. His current run suggests he has become an increasingly important component of City’s attacking structure, with his pace, physicality and ability to create as well as finish chances giving the team another dimension.

The September shortlist also features Liverpool duo Alexander Isak and Jeremy Jacquet, Jayden Bogle of Leeds United, Hull City’s Mohamed Belloumi, Brighton pair Pascal Gross and Charalampos Kostoulas, and Brentford forward Kevin Schade.

Unlike a purely statistical award, the final decision will combine the public vote with the judgement of a panel of football experts. Fans can vote for their preferred candidate until 12:00 BST on Monday, September 28, with the winner scheduled to be announced on Friday, October 2.

For Semenyo, the nomination also arrives at an inconvenient moment internationally. He was initially included in Carlos Queiroz’s Ghana squad for the opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against La Cotê d’Ivoire and The Gambia but subsequently withdrew after suffering a reaction following City’s win over Sunderland.

GFA president Kurt Okraku has since explained that Semenyo’s leg became swollen and that the player discussed the situation directly with Queiroz.

Okraku said Semenyo was willing to travel to Ghana for further assessment if necessary, but the decision was taken to allow him to continue his recovery.

His absence means he will miss Ghana’s Group C opener against Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on September 24 and the home qualifier against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29. Ghana will also face Morocco in an international friendly on October 4.

While missing the Black Stars’ opening qualifiers is a setback for Ghana, Semenyo’s immediate priority will be recovering fully and sustaining the momentum that has earned him another place among the Premier League’s monthly elite.

If he maintains his current trajectory, the September nomination could become another marker of his rapid rise at Manchester City.
