Chinese President, Xi Jinping has announced plans to meet US President Donald Trump twice more before the end of the year, signalling continued engagement between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies after Xi concluded his three-day state visit to Washington.

Xi said that he expected to meet Trump again at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China, in November, followed by another meeting at the G20 summit at Trump National Doral Miami in Florida in December.

The planned meetings would double the number of face-to-face discussions between the two leaders in 2026 and extend efforts by Washington and Beijing to maintain dialogue despite differences over trade, technology and other strategic issues.

Xi also invited Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to visit China for the APEC summit. “We do welcome Mr. President and the First Lady to visit China,” Xi said. Trump responded, “We will, and we’ll be speaking a lot.”

The announcement came as Xi wrapped up a state visit that included a formal red-carpet welcome, high-level talks and a lavish state dinner hosted by Trump and Melania Trump.

The three-day visit was intended to demonstrate stability in US-China relations, although it did not produce major breakthroughs on issues including trade and the safety and governance of artificial intelligence.

The two leaders have instead emphasised the importance of maintaining communication and preventing disagreements from undermining broader relations between Washington and Beijing.

Today, Trump took Xi to the National Archives, where the US Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights are held. The visit gave Trump an opportunity to showcase some of the country’s most important historical documents to the Chinese president.

Xi’s final day in Washington began with tea at the White House, where Trump and Melania hosted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, in the Red Room.

The visit coincided with China’s Mid-Autumn Festival, a national holiday traditionally marked by family gatherings, tea and mooncakes, the round pastries commonly associated with the celebration.

Trump described his discussions with Xi as productive and said the outcome would benefit both countries. “We’ve made great strides,” Trump said.

He later added that the two leaders had enjoyed a “tremendous visit” and made “great strides, very positive for both countries.”

Although details of their discussions remained limited, Trump indicated that the talks had produced outcomes that would benefit American farmers. “America is very happy about this visit and I’m sure China is very happy also,” he said.

Xi similarly expressed satisfaction with the arrangements and the outcome of his visit, thanking Trump and the first Lady for their hospitality.

The final day of the visit therefore combined diplomatic engagement with ceremonial displays of US history and Chinese cultural traditions, reinforcing the emphasis both governments placed on maintaining a stable relationship.

The prospect of two further meetings also suggests that the Trump-Xi relationship will remain an important channel for managing disagreements between Washington and Beijing in the final months of the year.

Xi Invites Trump To China For November APEC Summit

Xi’s invitation for Trump and Melania to visit China for the November APEC summit provides the next scheduled opportunity for the two leaders to meet in person.

Xi said that the leaders could also meet again in December at the G20 summit in Miami, creating the prospect of two additional encounters within weeks.

The planned meetings would give Trump and Xi further opportunities to discuss issues affecting the bilateral relationship, including trade, technology and broader international matters.

Trump’s response indicated his willingness to continue direct engagement with the Chinese leader, as he said the two would be “speaking a lot” during the coming meetings.

The announcements came despite the absence of major new agreements during Xi’s Washington visit, with both sides instead highlighting the importance of dialogue and cooperation.

For Washington and Beijing, maintaining regular leader-level contact provides a channel for addressing disagreements while preserving communication between the two governments.

Xi’s invitation also means that the next stage of the leaders’ engagement is expected to take place in China, following the Chinese President’s state visit to Washington.
