The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, has urged the party to use its period in opposition to rebuild its structures and strengthen its internal cohesion.

Addressing delegates at the NPP National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, he described the conference as an opportunity to renew the party’s commitment to collective action ahead of the 2028 general elections.

According to Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, the party must move beyond personal differences and concentrate on restoring confidence across its structures. He emphasised that stronger cooperation between the 276 constituencies and the national leadership would be necessary to develop a clear path towards the party’s future electoral objectives.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman acknowledged that the NPP is currently facing difficulties following its defeat in the 2024 general election. However, he emphasised that the party’s present position should serve as a period for rebuilding rather than a reason for division among its members.

“Our great party is not in the best position now. The party is in opposition, a very unpleasant place. Our place is in government, not opposition.”

Mr Appiah therefore encouraged members to approach the party’s current circumstances with determination and a shared sense of responsibility. He argued that the NPP belongs to all its members and should not be regarded as the possession of any individual or group.

Focusing on the party’s future, the regional chairman called for differences to be put aside while members concentrate on values that could strengthen the organisation. He noted that collective effort would be required to overcome the difficulties confronting the NPP and restore its political strength.

Meanwhile, Mr Appiah invoked the words of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. to reinforce his appeal for togetherness among members. He subsequently positioned the Ashanti Region as an important part of the party’s mobilisation efforts towards the 2028 election.

He further urged delegates to leave the conference with a stronger commitment to discipline and cooperation. In his view, the immediate responsibility was to ensure that the party emerged from the conference with renewed purpose and a shared direction.

The chairman also expressed confidence in the NPP’s capacity to recover from its present opposition status. He argued that the party had overcome difficult periods before and could repeat that experience through sustained organisation and collective effort.

“The fight is not between ourselves. I believe in our tradition; we have done it before, we can do it again. It is only a matter of time. The NPP I know will rise again!”

The conference is being held as the NPP elects national officers and considers proposed amendments to portions of its constitution, with more than 7,000 delegates expected to participate.

2024 Defeat Requires NPP to Listen and Correct Past Mistakes

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, also urged the party to critically assess the factors that contributed to its defeat in the 2024 general election.

He acknowledged that some aspects of the party’s previous administration did not meet expectations and called for those shortcomings to be addressed.

Mr Appiah explained that the election result should provide important lessons for the party’s leadership and membership. He stressed that a proper assessment of the previous administration would enable the NPP to identify areas requiring correction as it prepares for its future political activities.

The Ashanti regional chairman also highlighted the importance of listening to party members when making decisions. He argued that leaders must remain attentive to concerns from the grassroots because the experiences of members can help shape the direction of the organisation.

“The 2024 elections taught us important lessons. As leaders of our great party, we must always listen to our members.”

Turning to the NPP’s record in government, Mr Appiah urged members to acknowledge its achievements while accepting that some decisions and actions fell short. He said the party should take pride in what it accomplished but should equally be prepared to examine areas where improvements were necessary.

He further linked the party’s future progress to honesty in evaluating its previous administration. According to the Ashanti Regional Chairman, recognising mistakes would give the NPP an opportunity to amend them and avoid repeating weaknesses that affected its performance.

Additionally, Mr Appiah criticised the “difficulties” under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration. He cited issues including power supply, rising utility costs and concerns among market women as examples of matters he believed were affecting Ghanaians.

The chairman also questioned the government’s handling of its 24-hour economy policy and argued that the initiative lacks the conditions required for effective implementation. These remarks were made for the broader appeal for the NPP to position itself for a future return to office.

Beyond policy criticism, he turned responsibility back to the delegates gathered for the conference. Odeneho Kwaku Appiah described them as the owners of the party and encouraged them to approach the national elections with responsibility.

He asked delegates to make their choices carefully and leave the conference with a renewed commitment to the NPP’s organisational future.
