Ghanaian rapper and former student leader Darlington Kwasi Agyekum, popularly known as D Cryme or Dr Cryme, has added a major academic achievement to his list of accomplishments. The Tema-born musician graduated from Methodist University Ghana with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Management Studies, marking the successful completion of a journey that began when he returned to the classroom in 2023.

Photos and videos from the graduation ceremony circulated widely on social media over the weekend, showing the artist in full academic regalia. Fans, fellow musicians and well-wishers flooded the posts with congratulatory messages, celebrating a milestone that combined entertainment, campus leadership and formal education.

D Cryme’s path back to school was deliberate. After earning a diploma in mass communication from the Ghana Institute of Journalism, he enrolled at Methodist University to pursue a full degree. At the time, he explained that continuous self-improvement remained essential even while managing a music career.

“Sure, work is work, but it’s also necessary to improve yourself and study as well,” he said in an earlier interview. He also encouraged other artists to follow suit, stressing that education and professional success need not be mutually exclusive.

The rapper, who rose to prominence in the early 2010s with hits such as “Kill Me Shy” and helped popularise the Twipop sound that blended Twi lyricism with hip-hop, balanced studio work, performances and lectures. He later took on an even greater responsibility when he contested and won the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidency for the 2025/2026 academic year.

His campaign focused on transparency, accountability and student welfare under the slogan “For Us By Us.” He outlined priorities that included academic support, campus infrastructure, safety, financial assistance and greater inclusion of mature students. Colleagues from the music industry, including Stay Jay and others, joined him on the campaign trail as he moved from classrooms to hostels seeking votes.

Victory placed him in a small but notable group of Ghanaian musicians who have held SRC positions. Reggae artiste Samini previously served at GIMPA, while rapper Guru held the role at the University of Ghana.

D Cryme’s election drew national attention and reinforced a growing trend of entertainers engaging directly in student governance.

Reflecting on his leadership experience months later, he emphasised the value of involving the wider student body. “If one is doing something and has the platform to draw the people in, it is wise to get them to be a part of the process,” he noted.

He linked the principle of inclusivity and long-term thinking to his approach in music, where he prioritises lasting impact over short-lived hits.

The graduation closes a significant chapter. Having completed his studies while serving as SRC president, D Cryme now holds both a formal business qualification and proven leadership experience. The degree specialises in Management Studies, equipping him with knowledge in organisational behaviour, strategy and administration that could support his existing role as CEO of Twipop Recordz and any future ventures.

At about 40 years old-he marked the milestone in July 2026, the artist represents a generation of Ghanaian creatives who continue to expand their skill sets beyond the stage. His public commitment to education has already sparked conversations among peers. In one interview he specifically named several colleagues, urging them to consider further studies as a way of adding value to their existing achievements.

Public Reaction

Social media reactions to the graduation mixed pride with light-hearted commentary. Some fans noted the rare sight of the usually capped artist without his signature baseball hat, while others simply celebrated the discipline required to finish the programme. The volume of positive responses underscored the respect he commands both as a veteran of the Ghanaian music scene and as a student leader who delivered on his campaign promises.

Methodist University Ghana, a private institution known for its business and management programmes, provided the academic environment in which D Cryme completed his degree. The university’s emphasis on practical skills aligned with the demands of balancing public life and rigorous coursework.

Looking ahead, the newly minted graduate has not publicly detailed his next steps. Industry observers expect him to continue music while potentially applying management principles to his label and other projects. His dual identity as an established artist and university graduate positions him as a role model for younger creatives who may feel forced to choose between education and entertainment careers.

D Cryme’s story illustrates a broader shift. More Ghanaian musicians are investing in formal qualifications, recognising that longevity in the industry increasingly requires business acumen alongside artistic talent. By completing his BBA while holding one of the most visible student leadership positions on campus, he has demonstrated that the two worlds can reinforce rather than compete with each other.

As congratulatory messages continue to arrive, the former SRC president stands as proof that disciplined pursuit of knowledge remains possible even amid the demands of public life and creative work. His graduation is not merely a personal milestone; it is a public statement about the enduring value of education in Ghana’s vibrant entertainment landscape.
