Ghana Stock Market Sheds Momentum as 28 Equities Battle for Direction

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) ended penultimate trading session on a divided note, with the benchmark Composite Index recording a modest gain while financial stocks suffered a sharper decline amid a dramatic slowdown in market activity.

Although the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) advanced by 0.45%, the financial sector’s performance raised concerns about the uneven direction of the market. Trading volume plunged by 88%, while turnover collapsed by 92% compared with the previous session on Wednesday, October 7, highlighting a significant reduction in the value and volume of shares changing hands.

The session saw 28 listed equities participate in trading, with six recording gains and seven ending in negative territory. The remaining actively traded equities did not record price movements, underscoring the mixed performance across the market.

With the Ghana Stock Exchange’s market capitalisation standing at GH¢266.3 billion, equivalent to approximately US$22.6 billion, the latest session has added another layer of uncertainty to a market that has delivered substantial returns since the beginning of the year.

Composite Index Rallies as Financial Stocks Retreat

The GSE Composite Index climbed by 63.48 points, representing a 0.45% increase, to close at 14,024.18 points.

Despite the daily improvement, the broader market benchmark remains under pressure over shorter trading periods. The index recorded a one-week loss of 0.19% and a four-week decline of 4.94%, suggesting that Thursday’s advance has yet to reverse its recent downward trend.

Nevertheless, the index has maintained a strong year-to-date performance, gaining 59.91%. This indicates that the market has retained a substantial portion of its gains despite the recent pullback.

The financial sector, however, moved in the opposite direction.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) fell by 1.37% to close at 7,418.29 points. Its performance translated into a one-week loss of 0.33% and a four-week decline of 4.33%.

The index has also accumulated a year-to-date gain of 59.63%, demonstrating that financial stocks have delivered considerable returns despite their recent weakness.

The divergence between the two indices presents a mixed picture of market sentiment. While gains in selected equities supported the Composite Index, losses among financial stocks weighed heavily on the sector benchmark.

Trading Activity Crashes as Turnover Falls 92%

The most striking development during Thursday’s session was the steep contraction in trading activity.

A total of 1,638,218 shares changed hands, generating a market value of GH¢6.86 million. Compared with Wednesday, October 7, trading volume declined by 88%, while turnover dropped by 92%.

Such a sharp reduction in activity signals that considerably fewer shares were traded and that the total value of transactions fell substantially during the session.

However, the figures alone do not establish whether investors are deliberately withdrawing from the market, waiting for better prices or responding to other factors. A longer sequence of trading data would be needed to determine whether the decline represents a temporary slowdown or a more persistent change in investor behaviour.

The contrast between the Composite Index’s daily gain and the sharp fall in turnover is particularly noteworthy. The benchmark advanced even as the volume and value of transactions contracted, suggesting that the price gains occurred in a much quieter trading environment.

This distinction matters because a market rally accompanied by subdued activity can provide a different picture of investor participation from one supported by broad and rising turnover.

GOIL Leads Gainers as Selected Stocks Defy the Slump

Ghana Oil Company (GOIL) emerged as the strongest performer among the reported gainers, with its share price climbing 6.76% to close at GH¢6.00.

Digicut Production & Advertising followed with a 5.77% increase, while Enterprise Group gained 3.40%. MTN Ghana also recorded a positive session, advancing 2.38%.

MTN Ghana’s performance was particularly significant given its position as the most actively traded equity of the day. The telecommunications company recorded a trading volume of 515,091 shares, placing it ahead of several other frequently traded stocks.

These gains offered some support to the broader market, helping the Composite Index finish higher despite the weakness recorded in the financial sector.

However, four reported gainers cannot erase the wider picture of uneven performance. With seven equities closing lower than their previous prices, the session reflected competing forces rather than a broad-based market advance.

Ecobank, CalBank and Other Stocks Face Heavy Losses

Ecobank Transnational recorded the steepest decline among the reported losers, with its share price falling 7.74% to GH¢1.55.

Intravenous Infusions followed with a 5.56% decline, while CalBank dropped 5.41%. SIC Insurance Company also came under pressure, losing 4.56%.

The declines among these equities highlight the risks of interpreting the Composite Index’s performance as a reflection of every listed company’s fortunes.

CalBank and Intravenous Infusions were also among the most actively traded stocks. CalBank recorded 310,603 shares, while Intravenous Infusions registered 293,602 shares. Ecobank Transnational followed with 212,878 shares.

The combination of significant trading volumes and falling share prices makes these stocks important to watch in subsequent sessions, although one day’s performance does not establish a sustained downward trend.

GSE Faces a Critical Test as Investors Watch the Next Session

Thursday’s trading session leaves the Ghana Stock Exchange with a mixed outlook. The Composite Index’s 0.45% advance offered a measure of relief, but the financial sector’s 1.37% decline and the collapse in turnover showed that the market’s recovery remains uneven.

The GSE’s year-to-date gains of 59.91% for the Composite Index and 59.63% for the Financial Stocks Index remain substantial. Yet the respective four-week losses of 4.94% and 4.33% demonstrate that recent performance has been less encouraging.

The next sessions will help establish whether the latest gains can attract stronger trading participation or whether the market will continue to experience sharp movements amid reduced activity.

With GOIL, Digicut Production & Advertising, Enterprise Group and MTN Ghana recording gains while Ecobank Transnational, Intravenous Infusions and CalBank suffered notable losses, investors will be watching for signs of a broader recovery.

The immediate challenge for the market is not simply to record another positive close. It is to sustain price improvements alongside healthier trading activity and more consistent participation across listed equities.
