Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) staged a remarkable recovery on Friday, October 9, as turnover surged by 365% to GH¢31.89 million, signalling a sharp increase in investor participation after a relatively quieter session the previous day.
The latest trading figures showed that investors exchanged 5,380,378 shares valued at GH¢31,890,189.68, marking a significant improvement in market activity and offering a fresh boost to the local equities market.
The surge in turnover came alongside a 228% increase in trading volume compared with Thursday, October 8, reinforcing the sharp turnaround in activity as the market approached the end of the trading week.
However, the stronger performance in trading activity did not translate into uniform gains across the market. While the benchmark GSE Composite Index advanced modestly, the financial stocks index slipped, leaving investors with a mixed picture of market performance.
GSE Turnover Soars as Trading Activity Rebounds
The latest session delivered one of the more pronounced daily improvements in trading activity, with the value of shares exchanged climbing sharply from the previous session.
A total of 5.38 million shares changed hands, generating nearly GH¢31.9 million in turnover. The 365% jump in transaction value highlighted the extent to which market activity strengthened within a single trading day.
The improvement also came as 30 listed equities participated in trading, demonstrating the breadth of market participation during the session.
Despite the stronger turnover, the figures alone do not establish whether investors were accumulating shares for the long term or repositioning their portfolios in response to changing market conditions. The distinction matters because a surge in trading activity can reflect fresh buying interest, profit-taking or a combination of both.
Nevertheless, the latest numbers provided a clear indication that trading activity had accelerated significantly compared with Thursday’s session.
The Ghana Stock Exchange’s total market capitalisation stood at GH¢266.5 billion, equivalent to approximately US$22.7 billion, reflecting the overall value of listed equities on the market.
GSE Composite Index Extends Gains Despite Weekly Decline
The benchmark GSE Composite Index recorded a modest recovery, rising by 29.30 points, equivalent to 0.21%, to close at 14,053.48 points.
The increase offered some relief after recent market weakness, although it was insufficient to erase the index’s losses over shorter periods.
On a one-week basis, the Composite Index recorded a decline of 0.13%. Its four-week performance was weaker, with cumulative losses reaching 4.33%.
However, the broader market remains significantly higher than its position at the beginning of the year. The index maintained a year-to-date gain of 60.24%, underscoring the substantial appreciation recorded by the Ghanaian equities market in 2026.
This contrast between short-term losses and strong annual gains presents investors with a market that has delivered considerable returns over the year while experiencing periods of correction.
The immediate challenge will be whether the market can sustain renewed buying interest and translate stronger trading activity into a more consistent recovery in share prices.
Financial Stocks Index Slips as Banking Shares Diverge
The financial sector experienced a slightly weaker session, with the GSE Financial Stocks Index declining by 0.03% to close at 7,416.25 points.
The index recorded a one-week loss of 0.50% and a four-week decline of 3.34%. Despite these setbacks, it retained a year-to-date gain of 59.59%.
The performance highlights the divergence between the broader equities market and financial stocks, which have faced different price movements over recent weeks.
Among the session’s notable decliners, First Atlantic Bank fell by 4.76%, while Ecobank Transnational Incorporated declined by 0.65%.
Their losses contrasted with gains recorded by other listed companies, reinforcing the uneven nature of trading across the exchange.
The decline in the financial stocks index also demonstrated that a surge in overall market turnover does not necessarily mean every sector is attracting equal buying interest.
Intravenous Infusions Leads Winners as SIC Insurance and Kasapreko Rally
Intravenous Infusions emerged as the session’s strongest performer, recording a 7.84% increase to close at GH¢0.55 per share.
SIC Insurance Company followed with a 6.65% gain, while Kasapreko advanced by 5.49%. CalBank also posted a strong performance, rising by 4.29%.
In total, six equities finished the session higher, compared with two losers.
The positive performances offered pockets of opportunity within the market, although the limited number of gainers relative to the 30 equities that participated in trading suggests that the session’s improvement in turnover was not accompanied by a broad-based advance in share prices.
Investors monitoring the market will be watching whether these gains persist in subsequent sessions or whether some of the stocks experience profit-taking after their advances.
MTN Ghana Dominates Trading Volume
MTN Ghana remained the most actively traded equity by volume, recording approximately 4.43 million shares during the session.
CalBank followed with 416,756 shares, while Kasapreko recorded 118,224 shares. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated completed the leading group with 78,412 shares traded.
MTN Ghana’s trading volume represented the overwhelming majority of shares exchanged during the session, making its activity a major contributor to the market’s overall volume.
The concentration of trading in MTN Ghana also highlights the importance of distinguishing between total market activity and the distribution of investor interest across individual listed companies.
Investors Await the Next Market Direction
The latest session leaves the Ghana Stock Exchange with two contrasting developments: a sharp recovery in trading activity and persistent short-term weakness in its benchmark indices.
With the Composite Index still up 60.24% year to date and the Financial Stocks Index ahead by 59.59%, the market retains substantial annual gains despite recent corrections.
Whether the surge in turnover marks the beginning of a sustained revival or represents a temporary burst of activity will become clearer as subsequent trading sessions unfold.
For now, investors have fresh evidence of increased market participation, but the next test will be whether stronger turnover can support broader price appreciation across Ghana’s listed equities.
