I Don’t Produce ‘Fast-Food’ Music – Ras Kuuku

Ras Kuuku

Ghanaian Reggae-Dancehall sensation, Ras Kuuku has categorized songs promoted by dancers as “fried rice music” and shared why he won’t consider doing such music.

The artist revealed that his colleague musicians who pay dancers to promote their music through dance challenges end up getting disrespected by the same dancers.

According to him, some dancers eventually demand all the credit when the songs they are contracted to promote become hits.

Ras Kuuku further added that he prefers to work only with musicians who make good music and do not focus on music for trends.

“I want to work with people who write good music. And Ras Kuuku is one of the best songwriters in Ghana,” Ras Kuuku said.

Also, Ras Kuuku declared his colleague singer, Livingstone Etse Satekla, otherwise known as Stonebwoy as his “Artist of the Year 2023.”

According to him, the ‘Therapy’ hitmaker has worked so hard and done tremendously well throughout the year, most especially with his musical tours. He further commended him and stressed that he would choose Stonebwoy as his “Artiste Of The Year” if given the chance.

”He’s one of the hardworking artists under the year of review, I mean 2023. Even now here in Hitz FM studio, if you give me the opportunity to choose my Artist of the Year, it will be Stonebwoy because he’s done so well. I mean the connections, the gigs, I mean everything,” Raskuku stated.

Stonebwoy, known for his exceptional talent and numerous accolades, has been a dominant force in the Ghanaian music scene for years. His unique blend of reggae and dancehall has earned him a massive fan base and international recognition.

Ras Kuuku’s declaration comes as a testament to the influence and impact that Stonebwoy continues to have on the music industry.

Reggae; An All-Conscious Music

The ‘Wo’ hitmaker, asserted that “Reggae” is an all-conscious music, and about 90 percent of it makes sense and speaks to issues that affect everyone more than the other kinds of music.

One may not agree with him but it seems nothing will change the mind of Ras Kuuku when it comes to Reggae music. He is unequivocal in his conviction that it is the most sensible music type.

“Just listen to songs by the likes of Bob Marley, Lucky Dube, Alpha Blondy, Peter Tosh, and a host of other Reggae musicians. The lyrics are powerful and everyone can relate to it,” he said.

“There is no need to compare Reggae music to the other genres. Reggae music will always stand tall. It is a type everyone, including men of God, Muslims, Christians, listen to,” he further stated.

However, some veteran musicians, including Gyedu Blay Ambolley, have stated that Reggae and Dancehall music are not Ghanaian and should not be given attention. Ras Kuuku, who won the 2020 VGMA Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year, debunked the statement, saying the genre is for blacks and so long as he is black, he can claim it as Ghanaian.

“I think it is about time event organizers give more slots to Reggae in our awards schemes. By giving us more categories, we will be visible. At the moment, it’s only a few schemes that recognize us and even with that, they are not enough,” he stated.

Ras Kuuku, born Kojo Kurankye, is set to release his latest EP titled “Allow”. Some of the songs on the EP are “Eyeball”, “System Freeze”, “I Told You”, “No Body”, and “Tatwee”.

He has also collaborated with many musicians, including Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, Iwan, Ebony, MzVee, Black Prophet, Kofi Kinaata and Samini, among others.
